nal revenue, today told his colleagues
tne soldiers' bonus payments were
exempted from federal income tax.
Quoting from an act of congress
of last August 13, the commissioner
added :
"Payments of benefits due or to be
come due shall not be assignable, and
such payments made w. or on ac
count of, the beneficiary under any
of the laws relating to veterans shall
he exempt from taxation, shall be
exempt from the claims of creditors,
and ahsll not be liable to sttachment
or seizure by or under any legal or
equitable process whatever, either be
fore or alter receipt by the beneflcl
ary. Such provisions shall not attach
to claims of the United States aris
ing under such laws nor shall the
exemption herein contained as to tax
ation extend to any property pur
chased In part or wholly out of such
psyments."

Eugene last Friday to spend the week

of the Townsend club of Esgle Point
last Monday evening. Rev. Millard
sang several songs of his own compo
sition which were beautiful and ap
preciated by all. He also was the
piano accompanist for his songs. Re

meeting by the ladles of the finance

chased a dragsaw from Jess Elder
and plan to cut and haul wood for

The Pro volt ladles' club met last
week with Mrs. Louie Hansen. There
were 13 ladles present. They re-elected

Miss Carter and Miss Johnson, who
have been boarding at the Emery

store, where they will do their own
housekeeping the rest of the school

Eugene Baffin and daughter of Los
Angeles have been visiting the last
two weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Roland
Warner. Mr. Baffin will return to
Los Angeles the last of the week tc
bring his wife back to Powcls crec,k,
where he plans to build a cabin. On
his return he hopes to open a barber
shop. Mr. Baffin served as an in
terne In the veterans' hospital near
Los Angeles for several years and de
sires a vacation In the country.

Bill Turvey drove John Scott and

Mrs. Arthur LaDleu of Portland have
gone to Oakland to attend the funeral
of Mrs. LaDleu's mother. Their little
girls, Vivian and Edna, stayed here
to visit, and Mrs. M. B. LaDleu ac
companied them to Oakland, where
she will visit her two daughters and
friends for a few days.
Leo Merrlman la spending a few
days here visiting his parents, Mr.
and Mra. H. R. Merrlman. While in
California, Lee visited In San Fran
cisco, Marysvllte, WatsonvlUe and
Carmel. where the weather was beau
tiful. He also called on Mrs. Walch,

The two play casts, one. from the
Orange and the other the extension
unit, are very busy practicing at
Rogue Elk, where they will both give
their final performance Monday night,
February 3, to which everyone la In
vited. A small admission charge will
be made to benefit the Orange and
the unit. There will also be a candy
booth of home-made candy.
