J FANDOM RANDOM By Diok Applegate Signs should be draped around the basketball casinos of the northwest conference loop declaring, "Abandon nerves, all ye who enter here." Any one with nerves would have a tough time living through eome of the hair- ralalng game they've been plsylng up there this year, Plrst of the thrill ers was that two-point win by Oregon over Oregon State, 39-37. One man died in the exoltement. Then Tues day night Oregon Stat edged out Washington State, 27-38, and Wash ington State turned the tables last night by ths same margin, 89-81. What's more, the Important Ore gon-Washington game Friday night gives promise of being another of the same flavor, with the lead In the northwestern conference at stake. Most of southern Oregon, after hav ing watched Howard Hobson's giants mow through their schedule last year, are favoring Oregon for a win. Most of the sports scribes slong the coast oonour. There's this much the race for the title la going to be close and bitter, with every team In ths loop, with the exception of Idaho, having an almost even chancs at the title. Such close, exciting games are already beginning to do for bns fcetball In this district what the nine kind of ball has done In the middle west and east Jerk the game out of the doldrums fin ancially, so that It not only he comes eelf supporting, but actu ally contributes money to the athletic fund strong box. How much longer can basketball, un der those conditions, escape the ballyhoo that accompanies col legs football nowr Not long, you will probably agree. With the Medford Tigers on top so far In every game they've played ex cept the one against the Normal freshmen, their series with Ashland thla week la expected to draw a rec ord turnout. When those games are olos they furnish thrills that would be hard to beat In any coliege con ference. Ashlsnd still has the edge In the betting, but the Medford pros pects are getting stronger. Coach Bowerman'a warning to his squad,1 "A soon aa w quit fighting and start to get fancy, wore licked," has apparently taken etfeot on hi men. They go through their practices with the venom of a bunch of Gaelic foot ball playera from rival counties. Most of them, and they'll be the first to admit this, an not basketball players who threaten to disrupt collese circles next year. They're hlf.h school plsy ers, and there's not star among them... Realizing that they can't win by laying back and faking their opponents to death with olerar weaving and tricky ball handling, they drive as hard and as fast as they car. through the whole game, shooting often, and then flnlMiIng the game In a man-ktlllng drive down the home stretch. Therein lies their dan . toroiisnese, and Ashland, realiz ing It, has been- working hsrd to maintain that drive through whole game. Fire with fire. The game should h nerve racking. With Medford In possession of one of their most colorful basketball teams In years, and Ashland with a powerful outfit that la now leading In the southern Oregon race to ths state tournament, a record turnout la expected. The bitter rivalry be tween the schools has always made the games of more than usual In terest, and coupled with the fact that this Is the first of the heated four-games session. Principal O. G. Smith of the Medford school today foresaw a crowded house. The game is an Important one for both teams, and Coach Bill Bow erman of the Tigers is allowing no let-up for his men In their rigid training grind.
