WIND,. RAIN
L
CALIFORNIA: 2 DIE,
FLOODS FORECAST
BAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 11. AP)
Sheets of rain swept over Cali
fornia today, causing at least two
deaths, bolstering lagging precipi
tation totals and swelling streams
to threatening proportions.
Fireman Herman Oustafson, B8.
was scalded to death when an
engine of the California Western
Railroad and Navigation Co. plunged
through storm weakened tracks near
Fort Bragg. The swollen Noyo river
had undermined the tracks. Walter
Marvin, 63. Alameda, was killed by
an automobile, the driver of which
was blinded by the rain.
In the San Francisco bay area
strong winds crashed plate glass
windows, blow down trees, disrupted
power lines and tore several yachts
from moorings while basements were
flooded.
The Sierra Nevada mountains were
swept with snow and rain.
The Sacramento river near Colusa
reached the 22 -foot level, pouring
over the Colusa and Moulton weirs,
12 . miles apart, Fnrmers patrolled
weakened levees between Colusa and
Princeton.
Snow in the northern part of the
state diminished under the wetting
while in the Yoeemlte district addl
tlonal snow fell.
While the storm which hit central
and northern California late yester
day moved In on southern Cali
fornia, another was en route from
the north and the state was sched
uled for an additional drenching
late tomorrow.

TOKYO. Jan. 13 (Sunday) (;p)
Japan decided today to try concilia
tion before walking out of the Lon
don conference and dooming continu
ation of naval limitation.
High officials of the navy and for
eln offices, meeting In a vital late
nlflht session, decided to Instruct the
delegation in London to follow such
a course.
The Japanese will be told to avoid
a direct vote on the common upper
limit principle and to continue talks
with other delegations.
Thus far Japan has firmly demand
ed parity with the United States and
Qrent Britain and Insisted that this
condition be met before the confer
ence proceed.
These instructions are subject to
cabinet approval before they are dtS'
patched to London. A special session
of the cabinet was called for 1 p,
today to act on them.
Admiral Asa ml Nagano, head of the
Japanese delegation, had cabled the
government for Instructions as to
whether he should withdraw from the
conference which, meanwhile, sus
pended its sessions until Monday.
