Rockefeller, who two decade ago relinquished control of the vat em pire and fortune he built, today li seeking to reach the coveted century mark in life through a quiet, se , questerd existence that mnkes him probably the most Inaccessible man in America. . He la 85 Yara old now, four years from his goal, but members of his household, to whom he la "Mr. R.," say he Is alert and cheerful, patient and uncomplaining, and they fool certain that he will reach the century mark. physicians have forced him to give up all physical exertion. Golf, long a fnvoiite pastime, has been foregone. Christmas parties and other enter tainment which taxed him have been halted. His neigh borllness has been curbed. The once-fa miliar sight of Rockefeller, warmly bundled up In blankets, sitting in the tonneau of one of hie town cars on a morning's ride Is now a rare one, although he requests this privilege dally. Doctor's orders. It Is said. Complete relaxation, both mental and physical, rather than any medica ments, will bring to fruition his long- cherlsehd ambition, hla physicians feel. Detached though he Is. he retains hla Interest in the outside world and has the news read to him each morn ing. Those close to him say his com ments often are as trenchant and pertinent ss In previous years. He has been vitally Interested In problems of the economic crisis of re cent years, and when work was being done on The Casements he distrib uted It among the greatest number of needy families in this section, and adjusted the hours of work for each man to his actual needs for subsist ence. Better Than Years Ago ; His health and general physical , condition are better thnn last year and the year before. His days are full, from the time he wakes In hla oxygen-tree ted and air conditioned suite, until he retires almost with the sun. An early riser. Rockefeller now re mains In his roems until he has hnd breakfast. He is dressed, and goes downstairs In the newly-installed ele vator. If the weather is warm, he is per mitted to walk through his spnclous grounds to his summer house, net far back on the estate. There he Is read letters from the family and news papers. After mid-day dinner, he rests In his aulte In a bed specially built for him, for "Mr. R." is too tail for ordi nary-sired beds. (UP) The old fashioned Christmas tree that shed Us needles all over the parlor floor before grandfather had fired hla blunderbuss on New Year's Eve Is passe. In its place Is offered a new pro duct from northern Minnesota spruce swamps still a Christmas tree butj a sleek, durable, glistening thing of beauty wrapped In cellophane. The modem Christmas tree, accord ing to Ray Clement, state forestry expert. Is the product of an Infant industry which already boasts two large plants In Duluth and Cook, Minn. These new trees, marketed In vir tually every state In the union, will be colored silver or a processed green, and will range In else from table 'centerpieces 30 or 36 Inches high to majestic ballroom giants nine or more feet In height. Next year addi tional colors may be offered. The method of treatment vanes with the processor, but the chemicals used are guarded trade secrets. At Duluth, where the finished trees are piled Into a huge refrigerated ware house ready for widely scattered mar kets, a dipping process Is used. The manufacturer promises the 'needles will hold fast for several months as a result. At Cook the processor sprays the trees. Similar durability claims are made by him. in either method, the green trees emerge slightly darker in color than were the unprocessed trees. Th tablepleces, a specialty of the Duluth company, are equipped with a base. Minnesota has an Indirect Interest In this Industry, which began about three years ago. Most of the trees are taken from state-owned lands, under supervision to -Insure adequate re placements over a five-year period. Tracts of muskeg from Minnesota's 20,000.000 acre reserves are leased with renewal options and the pro ceeds revert to the state's school funds. i Packaging Is an Important part of I the Industry. Paper cartons carry the finished trees, which are packed In tightly, but which unfold to a natu- I ral contour when exposed to a warm rooro. Many of the small table trees are wrapped In cellophane, while at Cook numerous orders for large trees on request also are cellophane wrap ped. By-products of the Cook nlant in clude numerous processed wreaths. garlands and pine cones.
