Spectacular Film Pleases Audience Craterian Theatre Bringing to the screen a powerful story staged against a spectacular background. "The Last Days of Pom pell" opened last night at the Cra terian theatre. No effort was spared In the staging. The arena sequences show vividly the glory and savagery of the original Ro man "games." The scenes of destruction-earthquakes toppling a city to ruins, the blazing fires, the fear-maddened mobs are among the most memorable ever filmed. The film Is a personal triumph for Preston Foster In the difficult loading role. Doroihy Wilson Is excellent as the tragic young slave girl. Basil Rath hone contributes a memorable per formance as Pontius Pilate, and Alan Hale, as a rough-and-ready ex-con-vlct, adds much to the color and humor of the film. John Wood, a newcomer from the English screen, proves himself capable In a sensitive tole. and i.mall David Holt la appeal ing. Louis CaJhern as a brutal Roman official, Wyrley Birch as & slave, and Gloria Shea contribute excellent per formances. The story Is that of Marcuv, a young blacksmith whose poverty costs him the lives of wife and child. De ciding that wealth shaU be his goal, ho successively becomes a dlrtcr. di-als In slaves, and enters Into manj reckless denls. At the end .if twenty years, as head of the ar?na, arnmglng bloody spectacles foi the populace, his only unsurpassed human Instinct is his love and um'oitlon for his adopted son. The climax of the pic ture Is his realizv.i'.i.' that hM very wealth and position must cost him the life of his boy. His struggle with himself, staged against the back ground of a city rocking to ruins, provides a gripping conclusion for the picture. ! DANCK at K. P. Hall.
