Griffith Of Los Angeles, After Chilly Night In Auto Res cued By Snow Crew, A thrilling nd entirely fortuitous itidu of a Los AngelM ooupla now bound on the Diamond lake highway was told yesterday by W. L. Jones, construction nupertntenderit of the United Statee forest service. The couple was saved only by the circumstance that some of the sup piles of the Diamond lake CCO oamp were left behind when the oamp was closed for the winter a few weeks sgo. The couple Identified themselves ss Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Griffith, opera tore of the Lee Hotel at 833 West 8th street, Los Angeles. The two travellers were homewsrd bound after making a 6,000 mile tour of the northwest. They decided after breakfast Thursday morning to mo tor to Crater lake but at a Junction they became confused and veered off on the Diamond lake highway. Being unfamiliar with conditions In the region, they continued until their car, a ptilck sedan, got stuck In 18 Inches of snow. They they tried to turn the car around but It left the road altogether and were then unable to move It In any direc tion, Mr. Jonea explained. Overtaken by darkness, the tourists decided to remain In the car over night end look for assist ance the next morning. There was no .heater In the automobile but holes were cut In the panel under Instru ment board to permit the circulation of heat from the engine. The fan belt was removed and the engine run all night to provide warmth. Snow fell throughout the night. Early the next morning the couple set out on foot to seek assistance, not reallclng that the nearest house was In Union Ceek, 19 miles distant, or that the highway was seldom used at this time of year. After trudging though the deep snow for three miles the couple col lapsed T overcome by hunger and ex haustion, . At that precise moment a anowplow came along. On It were Mr. Jones, JTed Mlddlebusher, operator of the plow, Orant Necley. supervising me. chsnlo of the forest service, and Lieut. Henry A. Barrls of the CCO. They were plowing their way to the Dlsmond lake CCC camp to get the remnant of property that had to be left when the camp was closed for the winter a few weeka ego. It was only because of an unexpectedly early fall of snow that the supplies were left behind, It was explained, and It was believed that Mr. and Mrs. Grif fith owed their lives to that clrcum atance. . The men quickly rushed to the as sistance of the exhausted tourists snd revived them with alcoholio stimu lant. Their car was pulled out of the snow and they were taken to Mrs. Mary Orleve'a Inn at Prospect. They reached the reaort shortly after noon on Kday and there they were given lunch, the first food they hid had alnos Tursdsy morning. Whan the lost tourists were re vived they became hysterical with Joy, Mr. Jonea related. They were so excited they were unable to give a coherent account of their experience for aome time, he said. After they had rested at the Pros pect resort the couple set out again in tha car. eaylng they were going to Medford for the night but a check of all hotels In Medford and Ashland yesterday disclosed that Mr. and Mrs. Griffith had not registered. A paper prepared by O. J. Trlphon, president of the California Bee Breeders association, snd entitled 'Some Problems Pe Istlng to the Queen snd Package Business," wes rend to the conven tion. Mr. Trlphon being unable to attend because of Illness In his family. Prof. P. C. Relmer of the southern Oregon experimental sta tion gave a talk on the "Need and Value of Bees In Producing Satis factory Fruit Crops." George W. Nlchcols. Jr . of Tslrnt was the retiring president of the association. FUND HERE $32.75; ENDS TURKEY DAY A totol of t24.15 was contributed by 18 resident of the Medford area to the Will Roger Memorial fund during the past week. This brings the total for the first two weeka of the campaign to 432.75 contributed by 37 persons, $8.60 hav ing been received from 11 resident In the first week. Contribution have ranged from a dime to a dollar. The campaign will close Thanks giving eve. It is not the size of the contributions that counts to much as the number of contributors, the national committee has stated, ea It Is the lm to enroll as many as pos sible of the millions who were guided and entertained by the wit and phil osophy of the famous comedian and common to tor. The names of contributors during the first week, were published last Sunday. Tule Lake farmer, was In Jackson county Jail yesterday after being fined 100 and sentenced to 30 dsys by Justice of the Peace L. A. Roberts in Ashland on a charge of driving a truck while drunk. His operator's license wss cancelled for a year. Walker was arrested by state po lice Friday on the Soda Oulch Klamath ralla highway when he was en route from Lozler lane, where he formerly lived, to Tule Lake with a truckload of household goods, a cow, two calves, and 80 chickens.
