lent results, said Mr. West.
"ft Is surface coal, of course," Mr.
West explained. "It Is a coarse grade
of shale ooal tout It burns and we are
now using It to supplement wood. We
hope to get out enough to carry ue
mrougn tne winter. There la the pos
sibility that we may strike a vein and
If the prcepecte are good wo may be
able to get equipment to enlarge the
scope of our mining operations."
Mr. West's father, the late Josenh
n. weec, was a large ooai operator In
Pennsylvania and his brother, p. B.
West, la president of the Pittsburgh
Coal company.

until Thanksgiving eve. During that

are to be established In his commemoration.

campaign. The national committee

recalls an episode In the life of
Rogers, Indicating his honesty or

The first time that I had the
pleasure and privilege of meeting
Will Rogers was In the last davs of
October, 1018 Just 17 years sgo. 1
was at tnat time assistant to Mr.
Will H. Hays, chairman of the Re
publican national committee.
Late one afternoon. ex-President
Theodore Roosevelt 'phoned me to
come to his office. Arriving there he
took me aside and said: 'I havo In
one of my rooms a man to whom I
wish to make you Known. I met
him but a few days ago. He and I
are living at the same hotel. He la
an actor who la performing In a
midnight Zlegfeld ahow on the root
of the Amsterdam theater. His turn
consists of a monologue wherein he
makes comments on current events.
The man has such a keen insight
into the American panorama and
the American people that I feel, In
the course of time, he is bound to
be a greet factor In the political life
of the nation.
'I have told him of the work you
are doing. I want you to meet him
because bis good-will can prove a
great asset to our party
"He then took me Into the ad
Joining room. Introduced me to Will
Rogera and retired.
"I told Mr. Rogera what Colonel
Roosevelt had said. We had a half
hour together and as he was leaving'
Mr. Rogers said: 'I shsll be triad to
have you consult with me at any
time, but I wsnt you to know that
I consider that I must ever hold
myself an unblssed commentator on
public affair. I cannot permit my
self to let my reactions become
prejudiced. Even though, personally.
i am a democrat, wherever I con
sider It In the public wee!, I will
be glad to eo-operate with you:
but when It seems to me that your
party should be lambasted, I will

quickly as I would criticise them if
I felt they had It coming.'
"Will Rogers was little known
then outside of certain circles In
Manhattan. He waa Just coming. He
had the courage In Colonel Roose
velt' office to candidly say what
his attitude toward the Republi
cans would be under certsln circum
stances. And he showed that he
meant to keep himself unbiased In
so fsr ss a man could. To that re
solve he adhered throughout his
life.
"It vu the honesty of his opin
ion that was one of the greatest
hold he bed on the American peo
ple. "What he said to me that day was
not said In bombast, but with the
modesty that always characterized
him. At that time neither he nor 1
dreamed of the extent to which his
voice would some day carry but
Colonel Roosevelt prophetically ap
praised It.
"Only a week after Will Rgers'
death, I was dining with Colonel
Theodore Roosevelt, the second, and
when Will Rogers' name came up
he said to me: 'I want to tell
you an Interesting thing. Z spent
