(AP) San Quentin penitentiary prisoners furnished the American College of Surgeons today with the first exten sive object lesson of the sufferings that may be relieved by early treat ment of pyorrhea, one of the most widespread human Ills. Pour hundred prisoners volunteered a year ago to be treated In a stage of this tooth trouble when ordinarily ! little attention Is paid to It. j Today's report presented the first! results. It was made by Drs. Paul J.' Boyens, Alexander G. Bartleet, H Marie ! O. Marquez, George F. Ovideo, I. C. Gobar of San Francisco, and Leo Stanley, prison physician. The study was made for the California Academy of Perlodontology. Of the 400 volunteers. 39 have been elected for treatment, and the re sults for 70 of them were given to day. These men had the "early stage" before the teeth became loose, and had no sysstemlc diseases which might complicate the experiments. They were given a recently devel oped treatment by which diseased parts of the gums are removed sur gically, after which the standard py orrhea prophylaxis Is employed. Before treatment, these men had complained of physical fatigue, stom ach disorders and nervousness. Their improvement, the examiners report ed, began anywhere from the second day of the treatment to six months afterward. In all cases the Improvement has lasted unimpaired up to date, which in the longest Instances is about a year. Two of the men who had heart trouble not attributed to pyorrhea showed improvement. Digestive dis orders Improved in three out of four treated. Headaches were less, but backaches remained unaffected. .
