(UP) The doom of America" only farmer-owned rail road, the Atlantic Northern, was waled at a directors' meeting here when it was voted to suspend opera tions, effective January 1, 1936. Although co-operatively owned and free from bonded indebtedness, the road In recent years has been facing a crisis. Instead of using their own road, the owners have been patroniz ing trucking lines to haul their pro ducts to market. As a result, loss of revenue has been steady for the last 10 years with the exception of 1931 and 1932, when state highway paving operations brought a temporary halt in trucking activity. According to a report of P. C. CTem mensen. general manager of the At lantic Northern, loss during the cur rent year has been $5,298. The road has a cash balance of 93.727. Track and rolling stock are in need of immediate repairs which would cost between (2,000 and 13,000. Built In 1907 at a cost of 350,000, capital stock of the road now Is (111,; 000, fully paid. Appraisement of the property for rate establishment by the Interstate ; Commerce commission gave its phy- 1 steal valuation at (157.000. Salvage would net not more than IS per cent ' of Its normal value, according to ee- j tl mates. There are 400 stockholders, practl- -cally all farmers who live in the car rier's territory. SIBERIA 10 GET FOR PROTECTION MOSCOW (UP) A new aystem of railroad line In . the Siberian Far East, combined with the Improve ment of Pacific ports, now la being built by the. Soviet Union with two main objectives economic de velopment and military protection. Of primary Importance in the railroad system is a new trunk line to be constructed from Lake Baikal to the port of Komsomols -on -Amur. This roads will parallel the existing Trans-Siberian, but will run several hundred kilometers north of it. Thus, if an attacking Jap anese force should cut the Trans Siberian, Russia still would have a second line of communication be tween the Lake Bailed area and the Pacific. Feeder lines will radiate from this main route to the new indus trial cities which are springing up in Siberia where once there was only waste land. Further, a new line will be built Lo connect Komsomolsk and Kha barovsk, the tatter on the Trans Siberian. Two port of primary Import ance are being dug on the Paclfic Komaomolsk near the mouth 6f the Amur river and lite Sovletskaya Gavan. some hundred kilometers to the south, both in the Maritime provinces. Because of the military significance of these ports. Soviet officials are reticent about dis cussing their details. ANCIENT SLAVIC TOWN IS FOUND BURIED IN PEAT WARSAW (UP) A moorland set tlement of the Slavonic tribe of Old Prussians, dating back at least 3,500 years, has been discovered by an archeologlcal expedition from the University of Posen. The discovery was made on pen insula on Lake Blskuplnske, near the small town of Znln. The entire set tlement covered an area of about one acre. It consists of 15 wooden huts and seven streets, enclosed In a high wall and & palisade. Owing to the settlement being bur ied in peat moss, everything was In an excellent state of preservation. Many objects of dally use. such as cooking utensils, tools and a, crude wheel, were found In perfect condi tion. Other settlements and tombs, prob ably dating back 3.000 years, have been found in the Battle provinces, near KArtury.
