Recreational facilities and pro grams have been provided for thous ands. - Men, women and children who longed for expanded playgrounds, more tennis courts or free swimming pools during prosperity's peak, saw their dreams materialize only after the depression gave birth to the work relief program. Elmer Goudy, Oregon SERA admin istrator, admits there has been some "boon-doggllng" under the program to provide work. However ha points out most of the work Is economical ly sound and has Increased the state's valuation by millions of dollars, aside from the Intangible social and human values. ' Klamath Profits One of the most Interesting of pro jects designed primarily for social val ues was a water recreational program for adults at Klamath rails. Super vision was provided for skiing and skating. A men's chorus of 40 voices was started. About 200 persons from relief families engaged In a toy mak ing project. The entire program cost only about 200 and manpower at the peak was only two. Music, drama, swimming, handl--... .fan ri.nrlrv and .cvmnaslum work' along with other arts were taught In a community recreation program In Multnomah county. Man power at peak was '37 with total cost around S4500. In a general recreation program tv, Htjkt ln-.t summer, some 307 directors supervised all manner of sports as well as dramatics, aanoing. The cost to SERA was about $18,000, wltn sponsors aao- Swimming pools, tennis courts. niBwrnnnriK. calf courses, handball courts and baseball fields by the score have been constructed or Improved with practically every sizeable city In the 'state benefitting. ' Build Pools A pair of swimming pools were built at Salem, along with several tennis courts. At Roseburg and Astoria turf football and athletic fields with grandstands and flood lights for night play were constructed with SERA aid. A running track, Jumping pita, a tennis court and a horseshoe court were constructed at the La Grande school grounds. -; - w- - Firemen at station number seven In Portland are playing handball this fall on a court constructed largely through SERA funds. Two of the largest construction projects in Multnomah county called for about 17,000 improvements to the West Hills municipal golf course and excavation and grading of a foot ball field for Corbett school at around (25,000 cost. Here are the recipes so you can get all set for the party you are plan ning: fjark-o-lantem Pie 1 package orange-flavored gelatin 1 pint warm water Dried currants 8 halves canned apricots, drained 1 baked 9-Inch pie shell 4 mar shm allows, eut in squares . 10 pecan halves Dissolve gelatin in warm water. Chill. Press currants into rounded side of each apricot half to make eyei. nose, and mouth of J ack-o -lantern face; arrange In pie shell face-side up. When gelatin Is slightly thicken ed, pour over apricots, being careful not to disarrange frull. Arrange bor der of alternate marshmallow quar ters and pecan halves on gelatin. Chill until firm. . Hallowe'en Cake 3 eups sifted cake flour 3 teaspoons double-acting baking powder ij teaspoon salt ft cup butter or other shortening 1 cup sugar 1 egg, well beaten 3 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted , cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla Sift flour once, measure, add bak lnn oowder and salt, and aift together three times. Cream butter thoroughly. add sugar gradually, and cream to gether until light and fluffy. Add egg and beat well, then add chocolate and blend. Add flour, alternately with milk, a small amount at a time, beat ing after each addition until smooth. Add van la. Base in greasea ioi pbu. in moderate oven (32 degrees T.) I hour. Spread oranger butter frosting on top and sides of cake. eugar. Line buttered pie piste with two thirds of the mixture, pressing firmly against bottom and sides. Re serve remainder for top crust. Mix flour, cup sugar and salt. Add to pineapple, cook over hot water until mixture Is thick. Then add but ter and lemon Juice. Cool, turn Into crumb -lined pan and top with re mainder of crust, sprinkled over top. Bake In a hot oven (425 degrees P.) IS to 30 minutes. 6 portions.
