PXGE SIX MEPPORT) MAIL TRTBTTNTE, MEDFOKD. OREGON". TUTOR SPAY, OCTOBER 17,' 1935 WHISKY IS BY CONTROL UNIT Federal Board Bows To Science In Stiffening Age Requirements Clamp On Advertising !s Tightened WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 UP) T federal alcohol administration re defined whisky tentatively today to "conform with the march of science In distilling." The new definition were contained In tentative regulations Issued by rranklln O, Hoyt, federal alcohol ad ministrator. Hearings on the pro posed new rules will be held October 30 and 31, after which the final draft will have the effect of law. : The definitions Include: Straight whisky, a product which has been aged In charred oak barrels for a minimum of one year before bottling. By June 30, 1936, the FAA hopes to extend this aging require ment to two years. . 'Blended whisky." a product con- talnlng at least 20 per cent of one-year-old straight whisky. Must State Arc. ' The single word "whisky" will be used to label "all distillates from grain distilled at more than 180 proof, regardless of age, and all of the Im mature distillates distilled at less than 160 proof and aged for less than year." Labels on "whisky" stating the age will be required as in the past. Oln Is Still Gin. m" mean "ffln" and there are, In the tentative regulations, no more distinctions between "distilled" and "compound" gin on the grounds that "the product Is substantially the same whether distilled or compound." The standard of ldently for Scotch whisky, Irish whisky, brandy, rum, cordials and liquers "have not been eubstantlally altered," the FAA said. Indecent advertising and "state ments with reference to the thera peutic or curative effects of tho prod net" which would mislead the cus tomer also are barred In the proposed rules. All advertisements must show the sJcohollc content of the products ad i,rtiii. the new rules provide. Old Definitions Outmoded. Officials explained that when the new administrator took office three .week ago, definitions set up by the old federal alcohol administration bad been outmoded by new stills per Jected by science. "Our old regulations for straight whisky would fit alcohol as now man ufactured," an official said. . Aging requirements are stiffened In the new rules with the explanation that "shortly following repeal there was no appreciable stock of aged whisky In the country and htrefore. In former standards of Identity, this fact hsd to bo taken Into consider ation." OFFER PORTLAND IT PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 17.
