Quoting an unidentified "Informant,"
the Examiner says that the men who
once ruled Chicago gangland hat
turned both mualcal and literary un
der the Influence of Alcatraa leland
penitentiary.
Al Capons, the paper said, spends

banjo In the prison orcheatra and
pounding a typewriter In the library.

1934 REPORT SHOWS CONVENTION MONDAY
Th report on raining In Jackson
county for 1034 haa Just been re
ceived from the TJ. 8. bureau of
mines, and ahowi a remarkable rec
ord for county aa compared to other
oountlea In the state, being second
only to Baker In value of metals
mined.
The report abowa that 8,103.83 fine
ounces of lode and placer gold were
mined, with a value of 1284,930,
There were 13,789 short tons of ore
treated In the county, and the yield
of allicr, both from lode and placer.
waa 8,370 fine ounces, with a total
value of 13,130. A total of 3,313
pounds of copper, and 635 pounds of
lead were also mined, the report
showed. The total value of minerals
mined In the county for 1034 waa
2B7.297,
Josephine county vpis fourth In
the state, with 5,343.04 fine ounces
of lode and placer gold with a value
of 183,309. Silver yielded $086, and
033 pounds of copper and no lead
waa mined. There were '7,881 short
tons of ore treated. Total value of
all of the minerals mined was i84,
373, or 1103,025 less than the total
for Jackson.
Baker county waa far ahead of
either Jackson or Josephine, with a
total of $437,300.

Slain In Nanking
NANKING. China. Oct. 15. (AP)
The American embassy today re
quested the Chinese government to
exert every effort to apprehend per
sons responsible for the death of
Dr. Susan Waddell, a former resident
of Berkeley, Calif., whom police
said had been slain.
An autopsy today confirmed the
belief the woman, who was last
seen alive riding in a ricksha at j
8:30 last night, died of strangula- ;
tlon. Her bruised body was found
In a ditch today.

In an announcement today from the
society's -New York office.
Mr. Stevens, the Announcement
aald, "Is not only a vocalist but a
teacher In the field of music and one
who has been contributing hla ser
vices toward forming and leading
glee clubs for the Chamber of Com
merce and social service clubs, of the
city and oommu.nl ty.'
The society bulletin stated that
Mrs. English "Is doing exceptionally
fine work in the field of art." She
has done a considerable amount of
painting here. Including murals at
the Jackson school. A few months
ago she did some scenlo work for
a traveling light opera company.
The society stated that Mr. Stevens
and Mrs. English were "outstanding
In their community' and were "not
only rendering a real publlo service
but making in his or her own sphere
a laudable contribution to the arts."
Mrs. English was to leave ( this
evening for San Francisco, where she
has a number of painting contracts
to fill. She said she plans on mak
ing her permanent home there.
