O. (Bert) Sutherland, 65. for many
years prominently identified with
Roseburg and Douglas county finan
cial circles, died suddenly at his home
here last night as the result of a
heart aliment.
He was born January 18, 1870, at
Palatine, 111., where he became train
ed In accounting'. In 1802 he accom
panied a group of Chicago sportsmen
to Oregon on a hunting trip, and de
cided to remain in Douglas county
making his home here for the past
43 years.
At the time of his death he was
president of the Umpqua Savings and
Loan company.
Mr. Sutherland was a member of
the Masonic and Elks lodges.
He is survived by his wife, former
ly Mrs. Jean B. Pitts, to whom he
was married here, October 30, 1936,

The men, who went to a Lynn
school Monday to explain the
Uglous grounds upon which eight year
old Carle ton Nichols, Jr., refused to
salute the flag, were arrested after
they had declined to Join In the class
flag saluting ceremony and refused t

The boy, whose family belongs to
religious sect known as Jehovah's
Witnesses, objected to saluting the
flag as an "emblem of the devil." He
quoted biblical passages to show that
all worldly domains are a part of the)
dominion of the devil.
Nichols and James face charges of
disturbing a school in session and of
trespass in a public building after
being ordered to leave.
