J..e.e..a..v,f m . ,-'k,r-i71 BOYS, I'M GLAD TO FANDOM AT RANDOM By Dick Applegate With football coaches mnrshalllng their forces from one end of the country to the other thla week, the first major bombardments of the '3fi season will be fired Saturday. Some of the reverberations will be heard 'round the world, others won't be heard out of the lot on which they are played. The loud bangs will come from the upsets when smalt schools dump their larger playmates the muffled ones when the ex pected happens and the "feeler" teams go down to lgnominous de feat. Such reports mean little this early In the season. Medford high school will In all probability not play anyone, accord ing to Coach Bowerman. who yes terday took 38 of his charges to Mont Crest ranch In northern Cal ifornia as the guests of the Bayllss family. For five hours the squad forgot about football, and that will probably be the last chance they have for doing so for three months. The new coach Is driving his men hard in an effort to beat green material Into some semblance of a machine. At present It looks as though his efforts will be effective. With a UghL, new line, but a rather Impressive back field he already bas them running through plays and light scrimmage with a snap and fervor that Indicates a good season ahead. Few expect the coach to win all of hia gnmes, but If he does the victories will be that much sweeter, If smothered In a blindfold, It would be nearly Impossible to tell whether the team Is being coached by Bowerman, or his teacher. Prink Calllson. The aame methods, the same attack, the same viewpoint on "crying." or laying down on a Job are evident. The result is not too surprising; Bowerman played under the Oregon mentor for nearly eight years. The first casualty of ths present season occurred during practice on Thursday night, when Warren Bay lias, backfleld aspirant, sustained a broken arm. He may be back in uniform before the end of the season. With football season practically upon us. baseball will be bowing out of the way In a few more weeks. Already this Is In evidence here, with practically no one aware ot what has happened to the Medford Rogues. They play their last sched uled game next Ssturdny when they meet the Gold Hill Townles at Gold Hill, as a special feature of the Northwest Jackson County Fair, which will be held In Gold Hill that day. After that they may dis band, or they may sign with north ern California nines. Interest is slack, however, and members have started to drift away already. Although baseball may drop out of the picture, wrestling won't, and will continue to hold a popular Interest through the fall and win ter. New faces will come, oW ones will go. Pet Belcastro. one of the beat drawing cards here, will wrestle in Mexico, after spending a rigor ous two weeks training In northern California, chasing deer up and down hill. The training will do him ftood. When he returned from a barn-8tormln circuit of the coun try a few mont ha sro he waa in the pink fast, angrcwive, and im pressive. Since, he has put on a few pounds, and until last week was growing listless. A beet Mi ft from loots Estes revived his killer In stincts, and now he's again divert ing hla Interests to the game. Condition means much to a wrest ler, of course, FVw can hit the high spots without a resultant hitting ot the canvas. Johnny Hooa is an ex ample of what conditioning can do. He runs several miles a day. works out with Klamath Falls amateurs through the week, and on wrestling night slwsvs gives a good account of htmMif. althotuth he is fnr from big. fur heavyweight grappler. SEE YOU" BAER'S PUNCHING SPECTACULAR. N. Y.( Sept. 16. (AP) Jack Dempsey, always a root er for Max Baer, Is of the opinion the former butcher boy Is In shape to absorb plenty of punishment but that he would have to Improve on his showing of yesterday if he would defeat Joe Louis. Max, apparently In one of his periods oj lassitude, boxed six rounds yesterday as Dempsey and others looked on. In contrast to his savage punching of the day be fore, however, Baer had little steam In hla punches and seemed content to box with Paul Proas. Willie Mc Gee, Oeorge Turner and Lou Scozza. Several thousand fana went away disappointed. Early In his workout Bner was disturbed by the collapse of a stand holding approximately 400 persons in which several persons were hurt. In the top-bout of this week's all-star line up. Estes Is scheduled to meet Danny (He Files Through the Air) Savlch of Utah In the other half of the dou ble main event and In the 20 minute opener Johnny Boos, ring roughle from Indiana, will tussle Bob Kennas ton, the meanle marine. Belcastro was so relieved after his match last week that Instead of set ting out Immediately for a barnstorm trip through Mexico, he decided to stay around a few days longer and make one more appearance here. He is matched against one of the strong est men on the coast In the tattooed Canadian, but as he Is In the best condition of his mat career himself, the Italian klcker-upper Is confident of beating the nail-chewing northern er. Brooks, who says he can carry pia nos on his back ahd out-pull six men with, a rope around nls neck, lost two straight falls to Estes here two weeks ago, but says that he was completely demoralized by the Islander's remark able speed. Given another chance In the local ring, Brooks promises to make a better showing. Pete's belt will not be at stake. The popular Hawaiian champion will have a capable opponent when he trades grips with the ex-football star from Salt Lake City. Danny ca vorted all over the floor last week when he missed a flying tackle meant for Joe Hubka, but says he Is back in fine fettle again. Johnny Boos, barred from Medford for the past seversl weeks because he floored a spectator with a chair dur ing a hot bout In which the furni ture was moved about more or less roughly, has been reinstated by the local boxing commission, for his match with Kennaston.
