Chrysler, auto manufactur er, on several American Express com pany traveler's checks In Aug-. 1933. were arrested near Grants Pass Sept. 7, and have been bound over for ac tion by the grand- Jury, state police revealed here yesterday. The men's names were given as Jack A. Wilson. 36 and Arthur CI. Norman. 40, both residents of the Grants Pass district, said to have been leading a transient existence In southern Oregon for the past several years. Norman was released on 8500 bond and Wilson was being held in Jail at Grants Pass. State police reported ttwt checks In the amount of $1100 were stolen from Chrysler's dress coat In his car. as It was parked in Grants Pass two years ago during a tour of Oregon Several of the checks. In various amounts, totalling about J700. were passed In this vicinity, some during the Diamond Jubilee In June. 1934 according to state police, and it was reported here that some of the checks were also passed In Portland and Idaho. The rest of the checks are be lieved to be still out. stale police said. Investigation of the case has been underway for the past two years, and the two suspects are being question ed regarding other possible crimes in this vicinity. Theft of the checks was reported to the police by Chrysler when he miss ed, the currency shortly after leaving his car to register in Grants Pass. STEWART SEIZED I Coming Out Party for Safeway Staff FOR PLATE THEFT State police disclosed yesterday that Earl Stewart. 35. who claims to be a native of New York, was arrested In the mining district nenr Grants Pass last Tuesday on charges of having switched plates on a 1935 Plymouth sedan, believed to have been stolen in San Francisco, Stewart was tfven a 30-day Jail sentence, and dlifornm authorities are expected to arrive shortly to take him into custody on a grand larceny warrant Issued at San Francisco. Stewart was arrested about 35 miles back in the hills from Grants Pass, where state police had to travel on horseback to arrest him. He was doing special fire labor there. A load ed gun was found In his bunk. State police stated that Stewart had put facsimile license plates on the car, made of box shook, and painted to represent Oregon plates. According to the officers, he drove the car only at night, when the license plates looked real, and then ran the car Into the brush to hide It during the daylight hours. Inspector William F. Johnson, of the San Francisco police, left the bay city Friday to take the man Into cus C0M1Y CHEST First steps In the fall community chest drive scheduled to got under way In early October, were announced yesterday by Frank A. Hull, manager. Preparations for the drive ere pro pressing rapidly, and many commit tee appointments have been made. Headquarters for the drive will be at the chamber of commerce after Monday, Sept. 16. with a telephone at 465. Gain Robinson has been placed In charge of the general working com mittees, which will be announced In the near future. The executive committee consists of M. N. Hasan, general chairman; Leonard Carpenter. Raymond R. Re fer M. D. Field, 0. D. Bean W. 3. Bolder and A. J. Hauk. Brewer Tractor and Equipment com pany. His three children, Herbert. 15 Dale. 13, and Thelma, 10, are at home on Spring street. He and Mrs. Howard took off from the local airport early Wednesday morning, landing safely at Grange vllle in a stubblefleld near the homo of Mrs. Howard's father, Jssso Woods. Mrs. Howard remained in G range vitle while Howard flew to Rd River, where he was to pick up Mra. Martin Stanbury and take her to Grangevllle for the week end. In taking off from a field at Red River, motor trouble caused the plane to crash killing Mrs. Stanbury, who was In the front cockpit, and seriously injuring How ard. Howard's older son said he believed Mrs. Stanbury was his mother's step sister, and a daughter of Ed HUes of Grangevllle.' Word received here Saturday said that Howard was taken to a hospital at Lewlston, Ida., from the CCC camp at Red River near which the crash oc curred. Howard, an aviation enthusiast, has taken flying lessons at the local airport for the past year, making his solo flight last spring. He has had a considerable number of hours in the air, taking several successful long flights, and was known here as a competent privately licensed pilot. The plane which crashed was an O-X Travelair belonging to Brewer who loaned his partner the ship for the flight. It was this plane In which Howard had learned to fly. and he used It on several previous trips. Howard, a well known resident of the community and a prominent member of the Mcdford American le gion post, came here from Marsh field, where he had -been employed for several years as a mechanic. Upon his arrival he was employed as a me chanic at the C. E. Gates garage, and later went Into partnership with E. R. White of the White Machinery Co. For the past few years he has been salesman for the Hardie Manufactur ing Co. with headquarters with Brew er at 128 South Riverside. Howard has two brothers, Raymond and Perry and families, living at Bend, Ore. At the time of the accident, How ard's partner. Applegate, 92-year-old Medlord resi dent, who registered as the West Main Safeway store on Saturday. REVISED BALLOT TITLE FOR ROGUE FISH BILL FILED SALRM, Sept. 14. (Ft A revised ballot title for the Initiative measure which would permit limited Rogue river commercial and repeal the pro hibitive law, was issued here todiy by the attorney general. The revised title was made follow ing complaints to the other title by both proponents and opponents. The new title which follows, wus said to clarify the proposed measure. "Purpose: Repealing 1935 act which forbida all fishing In Rogue river and tributaries, except angling; per mitting fishing for salmon and stur geon with drift nets having mesh not under 84 inches. In that part of Bogus river approximately between mouth of Lobster creek and Doylrs rock, from March 15 to June 30, with Sunday closed periods; forbidding any other fishing therein except ang ling, and any fishing for trout or salmon within three miles outside river's mouth, selling trout, selling, possessing or transplanting for sale any fish from Joephlne. Jackson and Curry counties caught during closed season: trout to Include steelhedd." The Initiative was Instituted by commercial fishermen. Willamette Forest Opened SALEM, Sept. 14. (A) Governor Martin, by proclamation, reopened virtually the entire Willamette Na tional forest to unrestricted entry to day, the territory extending from Douglas county to Clackamas coun ty. (AP) A fall buying movement "which has been gaining momentum since Labor day," was reported by the commerce department today to have "broad ened demand" in both retail and wholesale trade In the week ended Wednesday. In its weekly survey of conditions in 33 cities, the department noted that the "forward trade movement,'' was based largely on this back ground : "Favorable weather, stimulated buying power in agricultural sec tions, sustained activity in building and construction, and gradually im proved employment conditions brought about by WPA allotments and Increased industrial production." And why not make primitive areas really primitive by protecting all non-predatory ani mals within their borderB? Cooperative effort by forest serv ice and game commission could easily prevent the valuable Colum bia black-tailed deer from becoming more of a rarity at practically no expense to the public.
