"The name Tamaullpas may have . an unfamiliar ring to rnoat Amerl - cans, but mention some of the state's principal cities such as Tamplco, Matamoros, and Nuevo Laredo and the state, one of the largest and rich est In the Republic of Mexico, quick ly Identifies Itself," says a bulletin from the Washington, D. 0. hea4- qunrter of the Nation?.! Geographic Society. "Tamplco, the great oil port, lies In the extreme southeastern corner of Tamaullpas; Matamoros, faces Brownsville near the mouth of the Rio Grande; while Nuevo Laredo, In the northwestern corner of the state, Is familiar to both rail and highway travellers as one of the principal gateways to Mexico. Little Smaller Than Maine "Tamaullpas has an area a Httle smaller than that of our state of Maine, and, like that state, occupies the northeastern corner of Its coun try. One of the most diversified of Mexican states, Its scenery ranges from lush, tropical lagoons along the Gulf of Mexico, to wide plains de voted to cattle raising and fruit growing, and lofty, rugged foothills of the great central plateau. "The long northern panhandle of the state, which borders on Texas, Is quite flat and Is very dry for eight months of the year, but whan Irri gated Is extremely fertile, producing good grain and fruit crops, as well as cattle. Well-watered valleys In the ' southern and central sections grow sugar cane, cotton bananas, lemons, , oranges, grapefruit, tobacco, and cof fee. "'Back in the hills wheat and corn are the chief crops, while beneath the sol! lies Immense potential wealth In undeveloped gold, silver, copper, asphalt and aalt mines, and marble quarries. While Tamplco no longer: enjoys the boom conditions that earned for it the nickname 'the Capi tal of the Oil World', the city still Is the center of an Important pe troleum indusctry, and It is one of Latin America's busiest seaports. Highway Crosses State "Tamaullpas may soon become moro familiar territory to motoring Americans, because two sectors of the new Pan-American highway traverse the state. The Pan-American high way, In fact, enters Mexico at Nuevo Laredo, passes through the neighbor ing state of Nuevo Leon to reach Monterey, and returns to Tamaull pas to continue to Mexico City, "The new highway, which Is im proved throughout Its length In Tamaullpas, pushes through the capi tal of the state, Victoria. This once remote sierra town, which Is also called Cludad Victoria, has developed rapidly In recent months as a tour ist and hunting center. It now pos sesses hotels, gn rages, and tourist camps. Another road, crossing the an-Amerlcan at right angles here, is being improved from Brownsville, Texas, to the city of San Luis Potosl, through the heart of the Sierra Mad res. "South of Victoria the Pan-American highway traverses a region of great scenic beauty, ranging from wild deserts dotted with huge organ cactus, to green river valleys where crystal clenr streams wind among palms, bamboo, and waving fields of sugar cane. Occasionally orchids may be seen in the trees. In the moun tains west of the road Is the blg cat' hunting region of Mexico, where mountain lions, ocelots, turkeys, deer, and quail still abound. "Another new road branches off at Villa Juarez, connecting with Tam plco. The state of Tamaullpas Is also traversed by railroad, and the Tan American Airways line from Browns ville to Mexico City via Tamplco." Even readers who make a formal research on the empire are confused. One authority avers that the natives of Halle Selassie's empire customarily refer to the country as Abyssinia. Another authority tells him that the natives dislike to be so called be cause Abyssinia is derived from an Arab term HabcshI, which means "a mixed race." Ethopla, according to thla later authority. Is derived from Itlopayavan by which the natives have been known since ancient times. Many Nnmea Misspelled. Many British publications, among them the Stateman's Toarbook, still call the empire AbysAlnlit. bvit the National Geographic society. In a bul letin released from Its Washington. D. C, headquarters, points out that Ethiopia Is the proper name because It Is used with the official sanction of the Ethiopian government, and the name so appears on the society's recently publlahed map of the Afri can continent. Just as confusing to renders are the spellings of Ethiopian place names in the dally news reports when compared with the most modern maps. In some articles names have been abbreviated, In some they have been stretched by the addition of a letter or two and otherwise altered, the bulletin states. For Instance, Walwal and Wardalr, In the trouble eone, near the Italian border, appear as "Unlual" and "Car der." Aduwa In the northern part of the empire, nee the border of Eritrea, has been amply supplied with aliases, for It has been called "Adua." "Adoa" and "Adowa. Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. Is stretched to "Lake Tsnnn," while Harar, the cen ter of the Ethiopian coffee Industry and one of the empire's chief towns. is given an additional "r" to make It "Han-ar," Recently news reports mentioned "Afrtub" and "Afdubba," but there ave no such places In Ethi opia. The report really refer to Afdnm. Awash has not been badly treated for It has been adorned only with an "h," making It "Hawah," but Oer- logubl has been both lengthened Rnd altered to make It "Guerlrwobl."
