AP)Bojr who re cently were part of the nation's de- preeslon-fed floating population are displaying and developing unauspect ed talents under the curriculum of the Citizens' Training Corps here, first unit In what Is hoped to be ft part of the federal youth program. Practical and mechanical, musical. dramatic, athletic, artistic and even Intellectual abilities are revealing themselves under the stimulus of this transient youths' school here, staff members working under Dr. George O. Smith, corps director, are finding. Publish Weekly Newspaper Within a few weeks after the or ganisation of the corps, whose facili ties are still incomplete, the 300 boys were putting out their own weekly newspaper, staging their own shows even putting on skits in the theatre of ft neighboring town organizing their own athletic contests and plan ning for dances. "I'd rather teach these youngsters than any I have ever tried," J. R. Clifford, instructor in Journalism and history, commented. The "project" method Is mainly used, with practical training along vocational lines In addition to citi zenship courses. Gliders Built In aeronautics, for Instance, two gliders and an old airplane haw been obtained from government service sources to provide laboratory work for the boys. They will tear them down and rebuild them. One of the gliders has been tested for actual flight use, and Doctor Smith said he planned that each qualified youth should complete a three-minute glider flight before fin ishing the course. The same procedure la being fol lowed with gas engines. In seaman ship a fishing boat la being used to provide actual cruising experience.
