Manhattam seems to have no professional nigh owls since Ben De Casseres became domesticated by marriage and Jamea Huneker slipped over the horizon. X 1 There are, c course, royster lng a t a y-outa, But mostly col lege boys on ths) loose, gambler, ohlaelers.' sundry pick thanks. But none of the jubilant who loved nigh for Its grandeur alone. The good fellows of the stein song whose many-ringed Ublea were the forums of phllosophlo da bate, earnest pleadings for cauwa all ,sploed with cultured nonsenaa. For those of us who love after- dark It's a sad omission., Thinkers hava surrendered night to despollers, the gangster, footpad and badger-worker. Once the forlorn midnight Magdalen with the aoftnesa of daybreak in her eyes Inspired our fleeting compassion. Now the tpa haa become a hard-?bltten. Imperti nent hussy Inspiring only our has tening atep. In the metropolitan vastnesa t know not a single nocturnal nteha that Is not shrieking of Jazs or roam ing with undraped ladles. Not a sano tuary without Its hatsnatohlng Tir wina or chalr-puller-uppera whisper ing of "sure things." Not a spot whara one may drop In and relax Into 4 rosy dawn. No Jack's, no Joe's.- ' Indeed I sometimes become alarris ed over the scum that aeema to con geal conversation that once had such, a dazzle and unwinking brightness- A lssrtltude has crept In, a sort of all gone hopelessness that nothing mat ters. A man may extend himself lm verbsl brllllanclea to drive home a point and be rewarded with a yawn ing "So what?" All the forward llttla lunching groups that used to flourish, around town have wilted, vanished. It does not ' matter what one say, what one does, when one goes 'to bed or gets up. The aim la to whlla the time. r Among the pieces where noon-houy palaver used to be in constant spoti the old Clarldge grill had no rival, and has none now. The excess of chat ter and laughter often halted tha sidewalk passera by. There were tha Oeorge M. Cohen table, the Wlltle Collier table. The Nat Goodwin tabla and so on. I think It was Leonard Merrick on his visit who thought 1 "livelier at noontime than Maxtm'a at midnight." I once saw a waiter with a well-filled tray, caught In tha backwash of a Joke while passing ft table, turn and rush for tha pantry entrance where ha appeared to hav collapsed with an opera boiffe crash.
