The two young men. who had in
their possession an old car for which
they had no papers, had "no visible
mesne of support", and have been
"hanging around" town for several
days, according to a report from the
state police, who made the arrest.

economical the making of Ice cream
at home by invention of Ice cream
powder. The basic principle for malt
ing home-made Ice cream with Ice
cream powder is simplicity Itself
one quart of mult, or milk ana
cream, blended with a package of
ice cream powder, then freeze. For
the lucky ownera of automatic re
frigerators, the process la even elm
pier, since there Is no crank to be
turned.
There are five versions of this con
venient product unfavored, vanilla,
chocolate, strawberry and lemon.
With these and a dash of culinary
Ingenuity, housewives can make an
Infinite variety of Ice cream des
serts. Here are the master recipes for
freezer Ice cream and for sutomaffc
refrigerator ice cream, and recipes
for two popular le creams coffee
and fresh peach.
Master Recipe for Automatic
Refrigerator Ice cream.
1 package Ice cream powder (va
nilla, strawberry, lemon or choc
olate flavor)
4. tablespoons sugar
3 cups milk
3 cups cream, whipped.
I Combine Ice cream powder and
I sugar. Add milk very gradually, atlr-
I ring until dissolved, f old into wqif-
' ped cream. Turn Into freezing tray
of automatic refrigerator and freeze
aa quickly as possible about hours
usuaUy required. Stir thoroughly
. three times during the nrst hour ol
freezing (cream should be thick for
the third stirring). Makes about Hi
quart ice cream. (With chocolate
ice cream powder, use H cup sugar):

Coffee Ire Cream.
1 1 package unflavored Ice cream
; powder
1 cup sugsr
1 cup water
3 cupa strong coffee
1 cup eveporated milk.
Combine les cream powder and
sugar, sdd water snd coffee very
gradually, stirring until dissolved
Then add evaporated milk. Freeze
In freezer. Makes l'i qusits.
Fresh reach Ice Cream.
'., cup sugar
Few drops slmond extrsct
2 cups fresh pesch pulp
2 cupa milk
1 package unflavored Ice cream
powder
1 cup heavy cresm.
Add sugar and almond estract to
peach pulp and let stand while ice
cream mixture Is being made. Add
milk very gradually to ice cream
powder, stirring until dissolved; tnen
I add cream. Freeze In freezer until
thick, but not hard; add sweetened
peach pulp and continue freezing
Makes l'j quarts Ice cream.

necessary body for a cake. Nor per
haps would you think that their own
natural oil would serve as a suitable
shortening. Unblanched nuts pro
duce the best flavor.
Brazil Nut Cake
Prepared as directed this cake
will provide a deliclouBly different
dessert. The recipe calls for:
2 cups ground H teaspoon
Brazil nuta salt
6 eggs 1 cup sugar
Grind the nuts (about H pound
shelled nuta or l'i cups before
grinding) and mix with sugar and
salt. Beat egg yolks until foamy
and beat In sugar and nut mixture.
Beat thoroughly and fold In beaten
egg whites. Pour Into 3 greased 8-
Inch layer cake pans. Bake In a mod
erate oven, 350 degreea F., for 80
minutes. Or pour mixture Into a
greased Sl4 inch tube pan or spring
form and bake in a alow oven, 325
degrees F.,for 20 minutes; raise the
temperature to 375 degrees F. for 10
minutea and then decrease heat to
325 degreea F. for 30 minutes.

sugar, firmly

Salt

Put egg whites, sugar, salt and
water In upper part of double boiler.
Beat with an egg beater until well
mixed. Place over rapidly boiling
water, beating constantly with egg
beater and cook 7 minutes, or until
frosting will stand in peaks. Remove
from Are. Beat until thick enough to
spread. Frost cake and decorate
with whole or cnt Brazil nuts. Cut
nuts may be sprinkled on top of each
frosted layer.

ernment official and a truck oper
ators' group united today in express
ing satisfaction with house passage
of a senate-approved bill regulating
Interstate movement of buses and
trucks.
"I think the legislation will have a
very beneficial effect on the whole
transportation situation." said Joseph
B. Eastman, federal co-ordtnator ot
transportation.
"It will help the railroads. Tt will
also help the truck and bus Industries
and tt will not eliminate competition
In the transportation field." He said
he did not believe federal regulation
of bie and trucks would mean
higher rates.
J. W. Blood, vice-president of the
American Trucking Association, Inc.,
said operators would "be delighted to
co-operate with the Interstate com
merce commission.
"We have been working for some
time for reasonable and fair regula
tion and thla fills the gup."
The bill now goes back to the
senate for concurrence In several mi
nor amendments.
Urged early in the session by Presi
dent Roosevelt, it places both com
mon and contract carriers, buses and
truck, under the Interstate commerce
commission, but generally exempts
private truckers, and trucks hauling
farm products, fish, shell fish, or
newspapers and fsrm co-operative
trucks.

weekly in Oregon, a report of state
activities stated today.
The recent average of these loans
has been (270 each, compared to a
national average of $400. Total loans
made up to July 37 was 4010, com

Outside of Multnomah county,
Clatsop county led In the number of
loans with Marlon county third.

appeal for national guard aid
maintain order In the Amador mint
strike had been forwarded to Gov
ernor Prank Merrlam's office today
by Oeorfje Wilson, president of the

The appeal swatted the governor's
return to Sacramento from a south

64 cups (3i lbs.) sugar
1 bottle fruit pectin.
To prepare Juice, stem about 3

cups water. Bring to a boil, covrr,
and simmer IS minutes. (For strong
cherry pit flavor, add tablespoons
crushed pita during simmering, or
4 teaspoon almond extract before
