Inusual Pinochle Hand While
playing pinochle Friday night. Mrr.
L. A. Williamson held an exception
ally good hand consisting of all the
spade trumps, which Is 12 besides
pinochle, two Jacks of Diamonds and
the ace of Diamonds. Mrs. William
son said It was the second time she
has held double trumps, but never
before has her hand Included all the
other unusual points.
Conduct Memorial Service L?st
Monday evening at the invitation of
the Sister lodge of Grants Pass, the
local Olive Rebekah lodge draped the
charter In memory of the late broth
er Lamphere of Grants Pass. Due to
severe electric storm earlier In the
evening, electricity throughout the
city had been shut off, and the cere
mony was conducted by candle light
entirely In harmony with the occas
ion. The regular Memorial team could
not be assembled, but the substi
tutes very ably did their part. After
lodge had adjourned refreshment
were served buffet style.

the actress Sari Marltza. protege of
MIrs Gaye's. and the producer. Sam

Invention of a ship that will not sink
or rock in the roughest peas whs
claimed tonicht by Henry K. Stack.
56-year-old Portland newspaper ven
dor. Stack's radical design' for ships em
bodies a series of pontoons Instead of
the conventional hull.
The inventor was born on the
shores of the Black 6ea while the
Russians and Turks were flKhtlng for
control of the district. A treaty left
his German-born parents living In
Rumania. Eventually he wandered to
this country, always staying near
ships and shipyards.
In 1917 Stack worked on war ves
sels in the Bremerton, Wash, ship
yards, but It wasn't until 1926 .when
he was seated In Portland's down
town park- blocks that the idea sud
denly came to him to build a ship on
pontoons.
Between 1926 and 1929 he carved
out models and ::r.r.!ly obtained a
patent. He has completed a number
of models which he says require only
the magic of money to place their big
sisters on the seven seas.

this afternoon taking an estimated
toll of 50 lives.
Many girls were working In the
plant and It was feared they were In
cluded among the dead. Scores of
workers were Injured.
Officials of the factory and munici
pality refused to answer questions
concerning the explosion.
Villagers, however, expressed the
opinion the first blast occurred In
the packing warehouse. They said
many girls were working In that
building.
The families of the approximately
five hundred employees of the plant
hovered around the outskirts of the
factory grounds until late at night.
