MARSHFIELD, Ore., July 37. (AP)
With both towns entranced by
some strange lure in the seven-letter
word, "Coosbay." Marshfleld and
North Bend have Joined In a mad
race to see which can be first In for
mally and legally changing the of
ficial designation of the town to that
name.
A proposed merger of the adjoining
towns under a single administration
the consolidated city to be known
as "Coosbay." failed this week. North
Bend rejected the consolidation plan,
and then decided It would change Its
name to "Coosbay." spelling the title
as one word. The two towns are lo
cated on Coos bay which Is written
as two words.
Now. In a formal legal notice,
Marshfleld has decided to call a spe
cial election August 10 for a charter
amendment to cnange the city's
name from Marshfleld to Coosbay.
Residents of the town believe they
can beat North Bend to the change
by a week or so. Inasmuch as certain
legal difficulties would make It im
possible for North Bend residents to
swing Into action within 30 days.
