DISTILLING PLAN!
VANCOUVER, Wash., , July 26.
(AP) Work had been started here
today on a distilling plant which
the operators say will cost $100,000
and will use apples, pears, prunes,
and potatoes In the production of
brandies and wines.
The Columbia Wine & Distillery
company la building the plant about
three miles north of Vancouver. The
first unit, of concrete, will be three
stories high and about 40 by 90
feet in dimension. The second unit,
housing the rectifying plant, will be
built next year. The first distillery
unit will be ready thla fall. Fresh
fruits will be used In season, and
dried fruit will be used at other
times.
FAILS 10 WORK HERE
A new chiseling racket has put In
an appearance here. Unlike most of
the rackets, this one relies, for the
most part, upon the deftness and
speed of the chiseler rather tthan on
the gullibility of the victim. A man
enters a store, and starts punching
numbers from .the punch board. He
turns up a winning number, collects
his prize, and departs.
tt failed to work yesterday, how
ever, for the waitress in a local cafe
remembered that the number he
proffered as a winner had previously
been punched. A check on the serial
numbers confirmed her suspicions
that a switch of tickets had been
made, for they did not matoh. She
called the police, and the man was
ordered to leave town.
