to meet the challenge of the auto
mobile, bus. and airplane for the
nation's passenger business.

In their attempt to regain passenger
revenue, which has been diminish
ing steadily for a decade, waa to re
duce fares. Basic fares were cut from
3.6 cents per mile to 1.8 cent as an
experiment In December, 1933. A
two-cent rat waa made for round
trip flrat class service, and three
centa a mile for one-way first class
service. During the first year the
reduced rates resulted In a sharp In
crease In volume of passenger busl
nees, and the ratea were continued.
A wide-spread alr-condltlontng pro
gram was the next step In the battle.
Introduced on the Baltimore and
Ohio road's Capitol Limited, the
"man-made weather" proved so pop
ular that all line took atepa toward
air-conditioning their tralna. Nearly
$36,000,000 has been spent for alr
condltlonlng equipment. It waa esti
mated. Faster Schedules Adopted.
Faster schedules on all lines have
featured railroad news since the com
paratively recent advent of the
atream . lined train. Competition
among the railroads In speeding up
passenger service la more spirited
than at any time In railroad history.
( f A pioneer in the speed era was the
Chicago at Northwestern, which on
January 3 Inaugurated the famous
"400" between Chicago and Mlnne-
.Mu. .n a 7 hour and 30 minute
schedule, clipping a full three hours
from the previous fastest running
time. Following the lead of the
Northwestern, the Burlington intro
duced Its twin Zephyrs, stream-lined
Diesel powered trains, on the same
run, and cut the time by 30 min
utes. Not to be outdone, the "400"
also reduced Its running time to V
hour. Latest entrant In the Chicago
Minneapolis apeed race la the Mil
waukee road, with Ita speedy stream
liner, the Hiawatha, also running
on a 7-hour schedule.

Chicago and Detroit by 30 minutes,
making the 394 miles in 6 hours.
Thee changes, together with
number of minor ones, are rapidly
regaining passengere for the. rail
roads. The "400" has carried nearly 10,
000 passengers each month since Its
first trip on January 3. The Bur
lington Zephyre now make a round
trio dallv to accommodate an In
creased number of paeeengera.
