Elmer Holatrom, special life sav
ing representative of the Pacific
Branch Amercan Rd Crow, will
be In charge of the water first aid
and life saving school to be con
ducted In Medford and Ashland
July 32 to 27.
The life saving course will be
given for members of the Medford
CCC district and the 27 Oregon
camps of the Vancouver Barracks
district. Two representatives from
esch company will take the one
week course and will then return
to their camps to conduct similar
courses for the entire enrolled per
sonnel. The school Is a part of the nation
wide life saving program being con
ducted within the Civilian Conser
vation Corps by the American Bed
Cross.

mander of the Medford CCC dis
trict. hs selected the Twin Plunges
In Ashland, for the morning claws
in swimming and life saving. The
aiternoon will be spent In formal
classwork at the headquarters de
tachment In Medford. The manager
of the Twin Plunges Is turning
over the complete facilities of their
double swimming tank for the army
use In conducting the course.
Mr. Holstrom, Red Cross repre
sentative, Is being sent here from
San Francisco to conduct the school.
He will probably use a number or
local Red Cross volunteers to assist
him In the work.
Picked men from each of the 17
fifth period campa In the MedTord
district and the 37 Oregon camps
from the Vancouver Bnrrarks dis
trict will be here for the school.
It Is contemplated that a big
evening life saving and swimming
demonstration will be staged at the
Twin Plunges at the close of the
course.

Miss Charlotte McNary, not any too
wide awake and frankly pessimistic
about the 7:30 a. m. outlook, arrived
In Oregon today.
In the arms of Mrs. Charles L. Mc
Nary. wife of Oregon's senior United
States senator, Charlotte, eight weeks
old, had the first glimpse of the state
that will be her home.
Mrs. McNary returned to Oregon In
advance of the adjournment of con
gress because of the extreme heat In
the nation's capital. The MrNarya re
cently sdoptcd Charlotte, orphaned at
birth by the death of her mother, an
Intimate friend of Mrs. McNary.

by the Medford Casting club and the
Southern Oregon Sportsmen, Inc.
While here Haslett will demonstrate
the proper use of casting equipment,
the proper way to cast a plug and a
fly, and will give advice on fishing
problems to everyone Interested.
An author of several books and
articles on fishing, "Doc" coined the
phnwte "Fight the fish and not your
tackle." He haa organized casting
clubs all over the country, and in
structed carting organisations at the
University of Southern California,
and U. C. L. A.
Haslett ts employed by four of the
leading tackle manufacturing com
panies In the country to promote In
terest in owning good tackle and In
learn I ng the proper oarn of th n t
tackle once the angler owns It. He
will be glad to Inspect all tackle
brought to him, and advise how to
Improve it, If such advice la neoes
sary. The show Is absolutely free, and Is
actually a school for anglers, and not
merely a casting exhibition. Coming
at almost the same 'time that a Med
ford casting club Is being organized,
the event la considered a happy one
by local enthusiasts.
Mrs. HAslett. who Is accompanying
her husband, ts also an expert with
a hook and line, and will give advice
to the ladles present.

county, holding the state agricultural
adjustment act Irlvalld.
"The chief Justice acceded to my
request and hna set the hearing on
appeal for July 34." the governor
said. "As distressing as the circum
stances are. It la apparent to everyone
that nothing can be clone In the mat.
ter until the decision of our supreme
court.
"I regret that our law was so draft
ed that It was subject to constitut
ional objeclon which Judge Winters
has evidently found to exist," the
governor continued. "I realize that it
Is necessary in view of Judge Win
ters' decision to have these constitu
tional questions determined by the
supreme court of our state, so that
we may know to what length the leg
islature may go In enacting legisla
tion upon this subject which will be
constitutional.
"Realizing that the harvest season
fa approaching, and recognlrlng the
neresslty of those engaged In the ag
ricultural Industry of the state of
having these legal questions deter
mined, I asked the supreme court,
through Its chief Justice. If the hear
ing of the appeal might not be expe
dited,"

H. D. TOMPKINS WINS HIGH
POST WITH TIRE CONCERN
In one of the major moves In
automotive circles during 1935, R,
J. Cope, President of the Fire
stone Tire & Rubber Company of
Uaiirornia, announced the appoint
ment of Harry D. Tompkins as
Sales Manager for the Eleven
Western States.
Mr. Cope, In commenting on the
popular tire executive's advance
ment, said. "Mr. Tompkins' long
association with our California
Company and Pacific Coast field
organization of districts, stores,
and dealers, qualifies him excep
tionally well to fill this importaut
position In an outstanding man
nor. I am sure his many friends
will be glad to know of his
appointment."
The post of Sales Manager was
left vacant when Leonard K. Fire
stone, third eldest son of H. S.
Firestone, founder and Chairman
ot the Board of the Tire Company
bearing his name, was called East I
to fill an Important position in the
Sales Department at Akron.
Mr. Tompkins started with the
Firestone Company on March 19,
ini9, as a general line salesman.
His exceptional sales ability and
likeable personality soon won him
advancement to more important
posts. On January 1, 1928. he
came to the Pacific Coast as a
special representative of the
Truck Tire Division.

received here not later than Monday.
