Old exclama tion Flying Colonel Dons 'Lab' Gown To Co-Star in Drama of Science By HOWARD W. BLAKESl.EE (Associated Press Science Editor.) NEW YORK. oP) The same qual- , lty of unerring workmanship which ! carried Col. Charles A. Lindbergh across the Atlantic straight to Paris has now taken him to the high places of scientific achievement. Perfection in simplicity of mechan ical design Is the keynote of success in Instruments he has been devising for the Rockefeller Institute here. The latest of these a mechanical heart and lungs Its details still a secret, have enabled Dr. Alexis Carrel, Nobel prize winner, to reach a goal sought for more than a century In medicine. Contribution Great. This la a mechanical pump so per fect that no Infection can get Into It With Its aid, pumping atlflcl&l blood and air. Dr. Carrel keeps alive In definitely whole vital organs remov ed from the body by surgery. There is no overestimate of the Im portance of the flying colonel's con tribution. Some of the greatest sci entific achievements rest on perfec tion of median teal apparatus de vised as a rule by scientists them selves. ' Colonel Lindbergh's peculiar fttneAs for this branch of scientific work Is shown In one of the earliest instru ments he made for the Rockefeller Institute. He adapted the principle and shape of a spinning top to solve a trouble some problem of scientific "washing. The objects to be washed were "cor puscles In suspension," living cells floating in a liquid at various depths. The problem was to change the liquid without touching or disturbing them, Colonel Lindbergh built a hollow top and filled It with the corpuscle suspension. When It whirled at the right speed the washing fluid would be sucked In at the pointed bottom Serrery Maintained. The old liquid would be forced out at the rapidly rotating edges, where the top was widest. Meanwhile the centrifugal forces balancing with the pull of gravity would keep the corpuscles floating right In the middle of the top's con tents. They would not move with the current caused by replacing the liquid. This work Colonel Lindbergh pub lished In 193a. It was the public's first Intimation that he had entered scientific work at the Rockefeller In stitute. But neither he nor the In stitute would tell what the colonel was doing. Now the publication of the first report on results of the mechanical heart reveals that the colonel was at his scientific work At least as long ago as 1031. It was then that be made the first of a series of the mechanical hearts. This means that his progress has been in the slow, but accurate scien tific fashion. It took him at least four years to attain the perfect me chanical heart now In use. Doesn't Dlnnis Work. His description of the first heart In 1931 was Issued without his name. Winning his scientific spurs has taken apparently as long, careful work as the flying training preceding the New York to Paris flight. He drops In at the Institute when ever he wishes. His hours of work there ere apparently irregular. Re ports circulate occasionally about the colonel being seen at the Institute's lunchroom, where scientists eat and chat. Never, apparently, does he speak of his scientific work outside a small circle of scientists. When his first signed scientific article appeared In 1931 In "Science," there may have been someone on the publication who knew that "C. A. Lindbergh, the sole signature to the article, was the famous filer. But one of the moat active editors says that neither henor the staff knew the author wan Colonel Lind bergh.
