M 'I Hill'' I Rogue's Roost Opens to Prominent Guests From San Francisco Th attractive Nion Tucker ium mer lodge on Rogue river, "Rogue's Roost." was opened during the week by Mr. Tucker, and yesterday Mrs. Tucker Joined hlra there, arriving In the afternoon by plane from San Francisco. Miss Nan Tucker la also at the lodge, having arrived with several gueate on the Shasta yes terday. The guests are Tod Powell of the San Francisco Examiner, Michael Tobln and Robert W. Tobtn. Jr., ot San Francisco. Mr. Tucker and his guests will de vote the week-end to fishing and Attending the state tran shoot here. The Rogue river la becoming in creasing popular aa a site for sum mer homes, with many Californlans coming each year. Of all the lodges now on the river, it la said that none are more attractive than "Rogue's Roost." Beginning the week last Sunday evening. Captain and Mrs. Herman J. Meiring invited guests for a buf fet supper and evening of bridge, aa one of a series of parties being planned this summer. Summer flowers lent color snd beauty to one of the charming events of the mid-week, when Mrs. Leroy Cronkhlte and Mrs. Francis Smith entertained twenty-six at bridge luncheon Tuesday at the Cronkhlte home. Louis, Mo., where they attended the gradu ation of their daughter, Miss Doreen Leverette, from Prlnclpla college, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Leverette returned to their home in Medford Wednes day evening. Besides Doreen and their son. Bruce, who had accompanied his par ents Mt, Mr. and Mrs. Leverette were accompanied on the return trip by Dave Hellyer of Los Angeles, who at tended school with Miss Leverette at Prlnclpla. He will be a guest of the Leverettes during the summer. The trip to St. Louis, by train, was described as being uneventful, al though they were held up for several hours by storms while traveling through Nebraska. In St. Louis Mr. Leverette took de livery of a Chrysler Imperial Airflow, in which tlvey all enJoyM motoring back via the Lincoln highway. Al though they stopped for a time tn Yellowstone national park, they reached Medford In five days, travel ing through; eastern Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Leverette Doreen, Bruce and Mr. Hellyer left yesterday for Lake o' the Woods, where they are spending the week end at the Leverette's summer cabin. Fifty-five were present, gathering in rooms decorated with yellow sum mer flowers and contrasting green foliage. Harts Entertain Portland Guests Arrival of the summer vacation season Is bringing many guests to Medford, among whom" are Mr. and Mrs. James D. The Misses Carlton Return From Beach After a delightful few days vaca tion at Gold Beach, where they en Joyed the coast scenery and the ex hlllratlng ocean climate, the Misses Carlton returned to their home near Medford the latter part of the week. -' Study Club Enjoys Pre-Vacation Meet Ths Travel Study club held a pre- vacatlon meeting at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Burr on Monday afternoon. ine study topic for June was "Pan ama Canal," and Mrs.v F. R. Hagarty brought an excellent paper on that subject. She told of the history and development of the marvelous, gigan tic engineering project, which eventu ally Joined the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and proved invaluable to all nations. Of special Interest to her hearers waa her account of the heroic efforts courageous men put forth in the accomplishment of the greatest of American or European engineering enterprises, of their conquest of yel low rever and malaria by sanitation and by elimination of the mosquito. Mrs. Hagarty also referred to the difficulties encountered and the tre mendous, death rate resulting from the building of the first railroad across the isthmus in 1855. The club was happy to have as guest speaker Miss Mary Martha Sweeeny, who had enjoyed a trip to Panama. Miss Sweeney was a pleas ing speaker and gave her hearers a feeling of pleasant participation. She entertained the members with an in teresting account of her trip through the canal, climatic conditions, cus toms of the people, ruins of Spanish architecture, plantations and their tropical products. Of special Interest and value was her description of the canal with Its three seta of locks, which lift vessels above the sea level. She said that this miracle of engineering construc tion is capable of cnrrylng the largest vessels yet built, but 30 years hence It will be necessary to enlarge it to I meet transportation demands. Elliotts Leaving Todtiy For Visit In Washington Charles Elliott and his mother. Mra. Margaret Elliott, are leaving this morning on a motor trip to Dupont, Wash., where they will spend a few days visiting. They will return to Medford via the coast route.
