BEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREtON. FRIDAY. JUNE 14, 1935. ITALIANS N HOPE their own will Aid them If war comes with ffthlop. Their hope are bawd on the fact that the religion of the outlying sections of Ethiopia facing the Ital ian colonies la the same aa that of those colonies. Eritrea and Bomalll and namely, Moslem. The religion of Addis Ababa and the majority of the empire Is Coptic Christian. Native Army Organized. The Italian high command hopes that If hostilities begin the Moslem portions of Ethiopia will come over to Italy. The following points are cited aa a basis for their expectations: 1. The outlying; Moslem aectlona of Ethiopia Qalla, Somali and Sldama were conquered by the late Em peror Menelik a generation ago', and those peoples live tn a subjection under Halle Selassie which Italians believe la Intensely Irritating to them, 2 The relations between the na tives of Oalla, Somali and Sldama on the one aide and Moslem Eritrea and Somali land are reasonably close. 3 A large native army, already more than 40.000 strong, wllll be cre ated by the Italians. It la estimated by military circles that this army will reach 300.000 men. It will offer many attractions to the Oalla, Som ali and Sldama natives. Overtures to MuMelmen. Already overtures are being made to the Musselmen In official speeches here by members of the government, Undersecretary of Colonies Atessan dro Lessons told the chamber of deputies: "Italy, although she reaffirm her fidelity to the religious Ideals which Irradiate from Rome and which have always Inspired her policy, neverthe less In Africa wants the faithful of their Influence over the Moslems liv ing In Ethiopia. It la significant that at this Junc ture the Crown Prince of Hedjaz. son of ibu Saud, ruler of Saudlan Arabia, has come to Rome, had long audiences with King Victor Emman uel and Mussolini and been received everywhere with the greatest of hon ors. I It all started when Mrs. W. C. Temple ton. wife of th6 Linn county assessor, claimed to have been the first woman automobile driver in the state. Mrs. W. w. Crawford, also of Al bany, came forward to say she start ed driving a car In 1807, three years before Mrs. Templeton said she had taken the wheel of a horseless car riage. Mrs. Crawford didn't claim the was the first woman driver, but said she believed she was the first of her sex to own a car In the county. Because the law requiring drivers to be licensed by the state did not go Into effect until July 1, 1920. the dispute may be hard to settle officially. Records in the office of Secretary of State Snell show that the first woman ever to hold an op erator's license was Grace S. Bailey, HUlaboro. License No. 31 went to her on the first day the law be came effective. Arthur F. Allen, 738 8. 3rd St.. Corvallls. drew operatora' license No. 1. Records show that Mrs. Crawioni applied for a license June 30, 1630, and said then she had had 13 years experience driving a car, whlcA would support her claim that she started to drive In 1907. Mrs. Tem pleton's application was dated Sept, 21. 1920. She listed ten years' ex perience. Islam to feel secure and tranquil In their traditional cult because she rec ognizes that it represents a form of the most noble and spiritual social life amid the furies of old and new barbarian paganism In Africa and elsewhere." In the same speech Lessona deliv ered an attack on the religion of Ethiopia, saying: "The Ethiopians make an arguing point of their Christianity and their centuries old resistance to the Mus sel man Invasion. However tt Is nec essary to look with scepticism on the Ethiopian Christianity which of fers us the spectacle of a Christian ity Impregnated with barbarisms." Official plans Trip Lessona has planned a trip to Mos lem Arabia to Interest the religious chiefs there In Italy's struggle with Ethiopia and to Induce them to exert E AUTO IN STATE? Tailless Calf.
