terior painting Is taking the lead in
the volume of repair and modernisa
tion projecta being undertaken over
the country under the stimulus of
the Better Housing Program of the
Federal Housing Administration, ac
cording to an analysis of 1.000 typical
Jobs picked at random in several
cities ranging In sire from 1.840
population to a 34,000,
The study showed that this type
of work accounted for 330 of the
1.000 Jobs analyzed, and represented
2. 1,000 of the total of si 30,000 spent
on all the Jobs Included in the sur
vey. Interior decoration, which In
cludes Interior painting, accounted
for 140 Jobs, for a total cost of 7,
000. The only other type Jobs ranked
above the 100 mark are "minor gen
eral repairs." 200. and roofing, 110.
The analysis went further to esti
mate that of the 3S.204.fl76 dwellings
In the United States, at Jesst 16,
000,000 are In need of repairs. Two
thirds of these. It Is estimated, will
be modernlced. Canvasses conducted
by local Better Housing Committees
have resulted In pledges to repair
from 1.800,000 property owners out
of 8.000.000 contacted. The pledges
obtained represent approximately
1400.000,000 tn modernization and re
pair buslneu.
The statisticians, estimating at the
rate of two Jobs to each home, fig
ured that SO million different Jobs
would be created If all the houies
needing repair were put In good eon'
dltion.
With an analysis c? i.OOO Jobs
showing about 16 pet cent for exter
ior paint, the con elusion is that
roughly 964.000.000 Of the 400,000,
000 pledged will be spent for this
type of work. Paint authorities con
sider this an Indication that prop
erty owners recognize surface protec
tion as foremost in Importance In the
maintenance of homea and business
places.

There are 13 new buildings and the
farm covers 1050 acres of Kentucky's
blue grass country.
The first patients were brought
here from Leavenworth, Kan,, fed
eral penitentiary. They immediately
were placed under observation for a
three-week period. At the end of that
time, they bean an almost normal
life on the farm. .
From time to time, patients will
be brought here from other Institu

been convicted of violating narcotics
laws, there will be few of the dan

When the farm population reaches
It peak, there probably wJU be 1500
patients.
Although the patient will not
lead a secluded life within the build
ings, their contacts with those on
the outside will be closely guarded
It will be vrtually mpossbie for nar

Dr. Lawrence Kolb, senior surgeon
In charge of the farm, has an

agents will be assigned to this dis
trict to protect the community from
peddlers who might be attracted
here by the opening of the farnv
Slow cures are desired to mini
