WHEAT DROPS ON
FI
CHICAOO, June 1. (AP) The grain
market was Jolted today by a drop
In prices that made new record lows
for tha season in wheat, corn, oats
and rye.
Venting their nervousness in a wave
of liquidation were traders who pro
fessed shock as a result of President
Roosevelt's reported expression that if
the government crop control program
were scrapped 36 cent wheat would
be possible.
Wheat slid 9 cents to as low aa 61
cents for July, carrying other grains
down sharply before sufficient sup
port appeared to right the market. A
mild rally, influenced partly by later
Independent strength in the corn pit. i
brought wheat back to within 1 to ;
l'i cents of the previous close, July
finishing at 83'; -83.

WASHINGTON. June 1 (API The
United Mine Workers of America
today ordered 340.000 soft coal
miners to quit work June 17 unless
otherwise notified.
This sweeping command, possibly
foretelling one of the largest strikes
In the nation's history, was issued
as Secretary Perkins sought to re
store by the Interstate compact
method some of the industrial prac

by the supreme" court's NRA decision.
Miss Perkins summoned to Wash
ington next Tuesday representatives
of the northeastern industrial states
to consider uniform state legislation
to maintain some code industrial
standards.
Maximum wages, maximum hours,
child labor and night work were
some of the fields the conference
would be submitted to state legisla
tures for ratification or rejection.
Massachusetts, New Hampshire. Rhode
Island. Vermont, Connecticut. New
York, Now Jersey and Pennsylvania
were asked to send representatives.
AFTER DEATH OF
NRA NOT HEAVY
The nation's business struggled to
adjust istelf to the resounding smash
of the NRA codes last week.
The supreme court's momentous de
cision caught Industry In a seasonal
decline, but retail trade, hampered
for some time by cool weather, spurt
ed in several sections to the best
levels since the Easter shopping sea
son, as summery skies sent shoppers
hastening for warm weather and va
cation merchandise.
Industrial production showed little
immediate response to the decision
