$82,877,000 worth of Arkansas oil

The orgy of waste bcp.' when the

west of El Dorado In 1921. Operators
went wild with the boom town mania
and worked frvprlshly with but one
objective to pet oil out of ihe
ground as fast as possible and on the
way to market.
Natural Cius Wasted
No one cared ho wmany thousand
cubic feet of natural gas It took to
raise a barrel of oil through the cas
ing to the surface. That dis
regard appeared with wanton same
ness throughout the 10 production
areas discovered around El Dorado up
to 1928.
Then came the day of reckoning.
No new sands could be discovered,
natural flow stopped In the wells and.
the fields "went on the beam." Each
stroke of the pumping beams has
punctuatrd a rebuke of wasteful op
eration. OH men have learned their lesson
now. but perhaps too late. Natural
gasoline plnnts "cracking" plants
are piping gas from Louisiana to sup
plement the deficient Arkansas sup
ply. The operators have learned econ
omy too. After they extract the-gasoline
from t he gas they return the
gas to the producers to use as fuel.
Iliice losses Incurred
"It is difficult, if not impossible,
to calculate with any degree of ac
curacy the losses Incurred by the
wasteful operation." Dr. Hrnnner said,
"but they may be classified as fol
lows: "(U Loss of the gas itself; (2) the
loss of the gasoline vapor carried by
the gas, and (3) the material reduc
tion in the quantity of oil recover
able from the oil sands by present
production methods due to the re
duction of gas pressure in these
sands."
The latter is the greatest loss.
South Arkansas produced 407.881.000
barrels of oil during the period 1921
1934 Inclusive, Dr. Branner computed.
Ultimate economic production under
present methods is 480.000,000 bar
rels. If the gas had been conserved,
he said, the recovery might have been
Increased 10 per cent, or about 48,
000.000 barrels with an estimated val
ue Of J43.9O0.00O.
Hranner's Keconls
Dr. Brnnners records indicate 227,
nno.noo.ooo cubic feet of eas taken
from Southern Arkansas fields during
the same period. He believes a fourth
of it was wasted during the flush
production days. Assuming the wast
ed gas had an average content of 2.5
gallons of gasoline per 1.90Q cubic
feet and the gasoline were worth 8
cents a gallon a mere $11,350,000 was
blown into the air. Add to that the
value of 45.400.000.000 cubic feet of
commercial fuel gas after the gaso
line was extracted and the loss ts
Increased nnother 7.627.000.
.That's where $62,877,000 worth of
gas and nil went.

the closure order affecting commer
cial fishing at the mouth of tha
RXue river goes into effect, between
'25 and 30 boats, with twice that
number of fisherman, arc putting in
their hest "licks" to clean up on what
even the fishermen declare will bt
the last of commercial fishing on
Rogue river.
So far the fishermen have not been
meeting with very much good suc
cess, the nightly catches totaling
about 350 chlnook salmon, and they
lack In size those of former seasons.
The fish are being canned at the
Macleay Estate company's cannery by
C. H. Bufflngton and associates.
The fishermen contracted to sell
thetr catches at 8 cents a pound,
from which one cent was to be de
ducted nnd applied to the expense
of conducting the referendum against
the closing law as passed by the leg
islature. With the closure order tha
state fish commission, the referen
dum automatically bemocea of no
effect.
