Parade Will Head Drive to Lodge Med ford Elks lodge received tele gram, today from the Elks Good Will tour stating that the two-car unit of the caravan that Is coming through Medford will arrive about 0 o'clock at the corner or Main street and Riv erside, where the Elks band will meet It. A parade will form and progress through the streets to the Elks tem ple, where dinner will be served at 6:30, followed by a program In which the two good-will ambassadors will furnish what promises to be unusual ly good entertainment. Those behind the wheels of the two Chevrolet good will cars, bound for the Grand Lodge convention at Columbus. Ohio, are Richard F. Flood, Jr., and Al Raas mussen, both widely-known radio en tertainers. Boston baked beans and brown bread, beer, salad, coffee, Ice cream and cake are on the menu for the banquet, which will be held In the basement of the Elks temple. The band will be present to lend an "a!r" to the celebration and the lodge members are promised a gala time. The banquet is for Elks and their out-of-town house guests. Chevrolet automobiles. Fisher bod ies, and Goodrich tires are represent ed by the tour, which is composed of many units all speeding toward Col umbus bearing messages of good will lo Elks lodges enroute. Messrs. Flood tnd Rassmussen have been heralded along the way as royal entertainers snd their Medford visit Is being greatly anticipated. Secretary Ernest Scott announced . today that those who attend the pro gram and banquet will be given am ple time to attend also the graduat ing exercises at Senior high school. Cold, Hungry Boy Falls On Stove 8ALT LAKE CITY. May 31. (UP) Sympathetic railroad men took In a oold and hungry transient youth to day during a rain storm. Leaving him In a small shack beside a hot stove, they went to.secure food and help. The youth fell against? the stove and Is fighting for his life in a hospital with severe burns. IB, of Butte Falls, was able to leave the Community hospital today after recovering from serious eye and head cuts received In an auto accident at 6:20 last night on the south Pacific highway near the In tersection of Central street. . Wright was a passenger In a south bound car driven by David Chase, also 19, of Delano. Cal., who was taken to the Community hospital for treatment of head and hand cuts. A state police report stated that the auto skidded US feet and crashed broadside Into a telephone pole, af ter apparently going out of control. The car, a Studebaker sedan, was badly damaged. Mark Miller of 41 Ross court was recovering from minor cuts and bruises today received In an auto ac cident at 10 p. m. Wednesday on the Klamath Palls highway near Pine hurst. Y., May 31. (UP) Joseph Allen, chief steward on the steamer Haiti, started laat Monday on his first vacation in three years but almost lost It today when he vis ited the ship again. He became so interested in a tour of inspection that the boat sailed before Allen realized he was being carried to sea. A tug took him off. (AP) Pointing out that the state board of higher education "has consistently refused to be stamped into hasty. Ill considered aotlou" on the question of selecting a chancellor for Oregon's system of higher learning. Wlllard Marks, president of the board, com mented today on the report Wednes day of the American Association of University Professors, criticizing de lay in making the appointment. The A- A. U. P. report had deplored the circumstance that although Chancellor W. J. Kerr has resigned two years ago. his successor had not yet been appointed. Mentioning that he had at first Intended to make no statement with reference to the A. A. U. P. report. President Marks told the Associated Press he would m feature of the committee report "which, I think, in fairness to the state board of higher education, should be clari fied." An fmimrtant Step "The committee seems to feel." he said, "that the board has not acted with sufficient diligence In the se lection of a new chancellor since the resignation of Dr. Kerr. "It will be recognized. I believe, that the selection of a chancellor is a highly important matter, one vi tally affeotlng the whole future of higher education in Oregon. The board felt It important enough to want to survey fully the field of available educators and check thor oughly the ability, personality, exper ience and record of achievement of men under consideration. "Furthermore, because of the 30. mill tax limitation proposed at the last election and the possibility that the legislature might feel It neces sary to make diversion of mlllage tax funds the board was not In a posi tion until recently to know its fin andal setup and hence consummate Its search for a chancellor. But in the meantime it has been assembling information so that when the time arrived, that it could act with full knowledge of its resources, it would bs ready to act promptly and Intel ligently. Ksrr was not a surprise move, but was announced a month ago In the April Issue of the A. A. U. P. bulletin, which reaches all chapter of the association In the country, officers of the local chapter at the Univer sity of Oregon said today.
