Clement Home Travel Study club met this week 'at the home of Mrs. A. R. Clement with Miss Elizabeth Burr presiding tn ' the absence of the president, Mrs. Walter Frawr Brown. An Interesting review of the book entitled. "Maria Patuma." by Peter Blair NUes, was given by Mrs. E. Iver- son. Thoxigb the twK was a recent production. Its plot has for Its setting and local color the Spanish explora tions of the sixteenth century In Guatemala. Mrs, Iverson's review was unusu ally Interesting, due to her pleasing diction and her ability to portray and unfold in a realistic manner this glowing story of romance and sdven ture. filled with dramatic incidents. She entertained the members with ne counts of the characteristics, cus toms and traditions of the Indians of Guatemala, as depicted by the au thor, who was qualified for the writ ing of this novel through his Inti mate knowledge of the scenes and of the people of that country. Mrs. C. E. Koppen's paper on Cen tral America was a scholarly work. In her graphic delineation of that fascinating but too little known country. Mrs. Koppen gave a concise account of the awe-inspiring gran deur of its mountains and active vol canoes, of the beauty of its valleys and tabelnnds. She said that much of that rich and fertile country was still undeveloped, virgin soli, and that Its mineral and forest resources had In most part been untouched. She also referred to Us large coffee plan tations and Its banana groves, and dwelt at some length on the astound ing difference In the scenes and re sources of the different republics. Laings, Recently Wed, Have Other Newly wed Guests Mr. and Mrs. Archie Lalng. whose marriage was an event of last week, had as their guests Friday evening at their home, 23 Tripp street, Mr. Laing's sister and brother-tn-lnw, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Robinson ( nee Freda Lalng) who were also recently married. Mrs. Lalng will be remembered as the former Olive Gardner of Ash land. ' Interesting Program For Church Group One of the most interesting pro grams of the, year was presented by the Women's Home Missionary soc iety of the First Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. H. F. W. Spllver. with the president, Mrs. Oliver, presiding. Mrs. J. W. Merrltt read the de votional. Mrs. R. 8. Daniels ably presented the physical geography or Mexico, with the aid of maps and pictures; Mrs. A. J. Hanby's paper, read by Miss Bailey, gave a vivid description of the religious back ground, and Mrs. Volney Dixon's presentation of the historical back ground ws most Interesting. A letter was read by Mrs. P. C Young, a missionary from Resht. Persia, who Is supported by the local presbyterlal, describing condi tions and life In that district. A social hour followed with tea and wafers served by the hostess and her assistants, Mrs. Carl Brom mer and Mrs. Walter Frazer Brown.
