How they find time to do It when they are malting anywhere from two to six pictures a year? John Eng ntad, who arranges the sittings for one of the studios explains that each time a star visits the portrait gallery anywhere from 100 to 160 separate pones are taken. These go to supply tha constantly Increasing demand of fan and film magazines and newspapers. And every picture must be approved by an of ficial censor In the Hays office. Of course there are other pletures that are a part of the studio routine "special stills," a set of which la made for each production for adver tising purposes, fashion pictures and straight news photos. Then there are the "set" stills, tak en for the benefit of the property de-, partment and the assistant directors. so that a set, once broken down, can be duplicated quickly In case of re takes. The greatest difficulty of posing portraits lies In finding a new pose 1 for each picture, Engstesd said. Borne stars have posed for as many as 200, 000 pictures under his direction. He hopes they all looked Just a bit dif ferent. Carole Lombard. Claud ette Colbert and Marlene Dietrich are the sars who have reached the 200.000 mark. (AP) A purported "wiping rag fraud" on the navy, said to have Involved nearly 7000 a month In cash and potential danger of damage to naval efficiency and marksmanship In time of war, waa revealed to the federal grand Jury today by agents of the naval Intelli gence department. Federal authorities predicted the indictment of several persons In con nection with the asset ted fraud when the grand Jury completes it Investi gation tomorrow. The navy waa said to have con tracted for the supply of more than 100,000 pounds of cotton rags of a specified quality monthly ta be used for polishing purposes. Navy agents rerealed their investi gations showed that after the rags were Inspected and baled, the bales were broken open and an Inferior quality material which would not absorb oil waa substituted. He explained that the oil absorbing qual ity or tna rags was moat important in polishing and. cleaning the inside of the big guns and mechanism.
