PAGE FIVE LEGION'S poppy SALE WILL OPEN FRIDAY MORNING Tomorrow the United States will pay Its annual tribute to Its World war dead by wearing their flower, the poppy. Millions of Americans In almost every city and town throughout the country will wear the blood-red me morial poppy to show that they still honor and are grateful for the serv ices of those men who gave their lives In defense of the nation seven teen years ago. In purchasing the pa per popp.is, they will contribute to the welfare of the disabled veterans and the families left In distress by the. death or disability of a veteran. Women from Medford unit of the American Legion Auxiliary will be on the streets here all day distributing the memorial flowers. They will be part of an army of nearly 100.000 wo men which will carry out the Auxil iary's nation-wide distribution of popples. Fully 10.000,000 of the little red blooms are expected to be given out with 81.000.000 received In con tributions in exchange for them. The paper popples have been made by disabled veterans working In 56 different government hospitals and convalescent workrooms located In forty states. The flowers which will be distributed here were made at Rosebltrg and Portland hospitals. They will be offered on the streets by a corps of volunteer workers un der the leadership of Louise Cleaves, chairman of the Auxiliary's Poppy day committee. No price will be asked for the paper popples, each person being free to contribute as little or as much as he chooses for his flower. All funds re ceived will be expended In the wel fare activities of the American Le gion and Auxiliary among disabled veterans and needy families of veter ans during the coming year. The bulk of the money will remain right here In Medford to be used In the work of the local Legion post and Auxil iary unit. Meteorological Report May 23. 193. Forecasts. (AP) Loyal Britons had further evidence today of the unconcern with which their king and queen face the communis tic derision which several of the all ver Jubilee 'celebrations have evoked.- Despite a demonstration by Jeering Reds, their majesties adhered to their intention last night of attending the civic reception and ball in their hon or in the city of London's 15th Cen tury Guild hall. As the brilliant assemblnge of guests was entering the hall, com munists gathered in the vicinity, pinging the Internationale and shout ing, "your fine robes would buy us bread." and "oir families are starv ing." (API Sales of liquor In the stores and agencies op erated by the state for the first quarter of 1035 totaled 91.674.337. the audit of the liquor control com mission's activities released by the secretary of state today revealed. Of this sum the total surplus of profit to the state was S374.544 for the three months. Sales In April dropped slightly under total sales In March which was the peak month v fax this year. April sales of liquor totaled 432.E)49. The audit showed the profits from the stores division only. It was ex plained that due to loss of records of the license and revenue division m the capitol fire additional time was necessary to bring that audit up to date. Since the Inception of the state li quor stores more than a year ago. the audit showed a total enrned sur plus In the stores division of $1,018. 687.
