MEDFORD MAIL TRTBUXE. MEDFORD, OREGON. TUESDAY. MAY 21. 1m. PAGE THREE Gleemen and Teachers In Joint Concert Gain Applause Packed House Departing from the customary for mal manner of opening a concert, the Med ford Gleemen last night at the high school auditorium, introduced aa a surprise feature their versatile and popular director, James Stevens, as "The Prologue" according to the ciatom of ancient Greek tragedy. Singing Leon Cavallo's Immortal lines as only an artist In the upper bracket can, Mr. Stevens at once commanded the lively Interest of the audience which packed the house. With the words "Ring up the curtain" the stage lights flashed, the curtajns were quk'y drawn, and revealed the striking p ure of the combined glee men and '-'ison County Teachers chpris. ru to sing. The pretty light formah urn by the girts con trasted with dark attire of the men and an atmosphere of musical enjoyment at once prevailed. The opening group, consisting of two numbers by the mixed chorus, was received with enthusiasm and the second number of the group. "Green Cathedral" was repeated. George Peckham sang two numbers, giving "Song of the Forge" as an encore. His deep, mellow, agreeable voice was never heard to better ad vantage. The piano accompanist, Sebastian Apollo, played the "Flight .of the Bumble Bee" by Rlnisky-Korssakoff, a number much liked by orchestras as well as piano ensemble. His speed and lightness were Incredible and he further pleased by playing as encores some of his own arrangements of popular numbers. Two descriptive numbers arranged as piano duets were then given by Almus Pruitt and Mr. Apollo. Mr. Stevens also sang in artistic and dramatic style "Tell Her I Love Her So," his feature in the recent performance of "Fra, Dlnvolo," this to the equal delight of those who heard it then, as well as those to whom It was new. The Gleemen sang with their cus tomary abandon and aplomb. Their precise attack, clever shading and evi dent good humor; their balanced and diversified program and their own evident pleasure in singing, all pro vided an evening's entertainment the memory of which will carry over to next fall when they again organize their drive for popular support.
