The tournament, carried on t the Smoke House, was one of the moat successful ever held In the city and waa hotly contested throughout. In the outstanding match of the day, which waa somewhat of n upset, Bob Maente. Stanford foot baller, got "hot" and defeated Leon ard Harding I up on the 19th. Maenu. who took alx strokes from the former Texas atar, played some of the best golf of his brief golfing career and Is a threatening con tender for the cup. Due to the fact that John Cupp. who was paired with "Doc" Boomer. Is planning a trip east, their match waa awarded to Boomer, It waa an nounced at the club today. Other results were: Mark Miller defeated Tod Porter, 6 and 6; Bud Simmons defeated O. O. Horner, J up; Ed Simmons defeated Bob Wood, 6 and 6; A. P. West de feated R. R. Hammond, 1 up on the 19th, and H. B. Bently defeated Charles Strang, S and 4. The latter match knocked Strang off a pedes tal to which ha had climbed earlier in the tournament with several sur prising wins. He Just couldn't hack it against Bentley's brand of golf. J. B. Kirk and A. E. Orr were scheduled to play their match to day. Pairings in the quarter finals now stand: Maents vs. Miller, Bud Sim mons vs. winner of the Klrk-Orr match, Ed. Simmons vs. West, and Cupp vs. Bentley. The finals of the tournament will be staged May 30, when the Spring Handicap trophy, a new cup spon sored by John and Frank Perl, will be awarded. The cup, now at the clubhouse, Is considered one of the most beautiful ever put up for a southern Oregon tournament. BE HERE TUESDAY 9 A. M. The match Saturday was the sec ond and final match this year be tween the Ashland and Medford teams. The Tigers won the first match by a similar score. To date, the locala have won four out ol five matches. Carson of Ashland defeated Coss of Medford, 2-e. fl-3. 0-4. Carson also defeated Coaa In the first match at Ashland. Cope of Medford had little trouble In defeating Burns of Ashland. 8-1. fl-4. Brown. Medford. thoroughly trounced CroRgtngs, Ash land, 6-3. fl-0. Herrled. Medford, de feated Hocklngs. Ashland. In a three set match. 4-6. 6-3. 6-3. Herrteds driving seemed to be too much for HnckliiRa to play against. Miller. Ashland, defeated rader, Medford 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Fader started out strong but wUtd under Miller's steady playing. In the doubles. Cope and Brown. Medford, defented Caraon and Hock lngs. Ashland, 7-5. 3-0, 6-3. Miller ; and SrroRRlngs.
