today for a twin-motored transport
plane at the end of a non-stop 3100
mile flight over a course between
Washington, Norfolk, Va., and New
York.
The records were set by Daniel W.
Tomllnsou. former nnvy flier, and
Joseph A. Bartles, flying a TWA
Douglas airliner for more than 19
hours. They landed at Floyd Bennett
field today at 1:10 a. m. (E. S. T.)
The filers, startinR from Floyd Bfn
nett field at fi:59 a. m. yesterday,
covered 3.100.849 miles, or about S.
000 kilometers.
They covered four laps of a trian
gular course of 621 miles (1.000 kilo
meters) between Floyd Bennett field,
Boiling field, Washington, and Wil-
loughby Spit. Norfolk. Va.
On the first four laps the average
speeds were respectively 168. 047,
174.208. 172.967 and 171.03 miles on.
hour. The speed for the final 1.000
kilometers was not announced offi
cially, but was approximately 160
miles an hour. The average spe:a
for the entire flight was 169.031.
PORTLAND. Ore., May 18. (API
New business totaling 75.299.000 feet,
about 74 per cent above the weekly
average for May, was reported by the
Western Pine association today for
the week ending May 11. The total
was nine per cent greater than for
the previous week.
Shipments totaled 60,535,000 feet
and production was 49.802,000 feet.
For the corresponding week a year
ago the same mills reported orders
of 43,769.000 feet, and production of
44.401.000 feet.
For the period January 1 to date
orders are 32 per cent above the total
for the corresponding period last
year.

play for the Junior high assembly,
but was unable to do so because
of lack of time. Miss Van Dyke

played at the local Junior high
nchool.
The program was arranged by
Mrs. Evelyn Nye. music super visor,
and was heard with unvarying at
tention by the 700 children In the
assembly, alt of whom are about the
nfie of Miss Marcta herself.
The music chosen shows the range
of her repertoire and all waa ren
dered with ease, grace and musical
feeling unusual in one so young

planning a recital for her during

day, and services will be held In the
South Methodist church at 11 o'clock.
It will soon be Poppy Days, Friday,
May 24 and Saturday, May 30 having
been declared as such by the mayor.
Almost every veteran who dies now
leaves a widow and children and few
leave sufficient means to provide for
their families. The seventeen yeare
which have paaaed since the war
make it very difficult to prove
that the veterans' death resulted from
war service, and unless such legal
proof can be established no govern
ment aid Is available for the family.
The Legion and Auxiliary must step
in with emergen, y aid until other aid
can be secured or the family made
self-supporting.
"In addition to the veterans who
die, there are more than 100,000 con
stantly. In hospitals. We endeavor to
do something for those veterans while
they are atlll within reach of our help
providing them cheer and comforts
while they are In the hospital and
aiding them In the long, uphill strug
gle to regain an economic foothold
after they leave the hospitals. Their
families too, often need aid.
"The popples which we will offer
Friday and Saturday, May 34 and 35,
to be worn in honor of the dead, are
our principal means of raising funds
for this work for the living."

Mrs. C. O. Darby occupied the
choir during the second half of the
meeting. A letter of appreciation
was read from the old people's home
in Salem for the fine quilt sent
them some time ego.
Announcement was made of the
alt day meeting of the Cascade dis
trict Wednesday, May 33nd here In
the church parlors.
Mrs. Tucker conducted the mite
box opening program, after which
the meeting adjourned. Refresh
ment were served during the soc
ial period.

Honors Graduates
One of the moat successful social
functions of the year at Southern
Oregon Normal school was the an
nual Junior and Senior banquet,
honoring the class of '3S, held on
Thursday evening at the Lithla
Springs hotel at Ashland.
The banquet table was attractive
ly arranged in yellow and blue car
rying out the clans colors. Corsages
made hy the Junior girls were pres
ented to each guest present,

What the Girl
Scouts Are Doing
The girls of troop 3. assisted by
their lieutenants Leda O'Neal and
Dorothy Paley entertained In honor of
their mothers, Monday evening on
the terrace of the Girl Scout Head
quarters. This delightful out-of-doors
setting added much to the enjoyment
of the Interesting program presented
by the girl. A special feature of the
program was group singing by the
troop, several rounds being Included.
The Investiture ceremony was held
at which time Peggy Nixon and Nan
ette Rosenberg were presented with
their scout pin. At the conclusion
of the program all presont were
served with punch and wafers.
The May court of awards will be
held on Saturday, May 26 at the
Junior high school at 3:30 o'clock.
The different troops are being asked
to contribute stunts for the program
and a Urge number of badges are to
be awarded.
Writers' and Art Clubs
Ftll Need for Expression
Both the Writers' club and Art
club, sponsored by the Skyline Trail
society, held their regular meetings
last week and are rapidly and suc
cessfully filling a need for the op
portunity of group participation In
creative expression, constructive study
and aesthetlo appreciation.
The Art club met Tuesday evening
at It regular meeting place at 33ft
South Ivy street. Artists drew from
a model who posed as a gypsy girl.
Study for the evening centered large
ly on simplified figure construction
methods. This study will be con
tinued each week for some time.
The Writers' club met Thursday
evening at the Hotel Medford. A study
of the essay was the main activity
of the evening.

Enthusiasm Increases for the non
Jury art exhibit to be held here from
June 4 to June 8 under the auspice
of the Chamber of Commerce. Ovet
80 artists have already completed en
trance registrations to present their
work and mom are expected before
the closing date set at May 31.
Exceptional work 1 expected In the
landscapes by L. Howard Crawford,
now with the national park service
at Crater Lake, and McClouskle, in
tornatlonally known for his land
scapes In oils. Mr. Crawford will ex
hibit a group of water color can
vases of Crater Lake scenes, and Mr.
McClouskle will present four of hi
more famous landscapes. Both these
artists have done extensive studying
in Europe, and their paintings are ex
pected to form a nucleus for an out
standing art display.
Members of the Chamber of Com
merce committee are pleased with the
early public response to the exhibit.
It Is the first show of Its kind to be
held In southern Orogon, and It Is
believed that It will go far to stimu
late Interest In various phases of art
In this locality.
The display will Include a variety
of exhibits. Including paintings, or
works of art done In any medium, In
cluding oils, water colors, charcoal,
pencil, pastel, and pen and Ink; batik
wall hangings; a sculpture and soap
carvings; hand painted photograph;
hand painted china and vases, poper
flowers and designs and posters.
