PAGE SIX MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. BEDFORD. ORFOONT. SUNDAY. APRTL 28. 1!M. TOURIST TRAVEL EUROPE GETS PROMOTION HELP WASHINGTON. D. C April 28. Convincing evidence of the desire of European countries to promote tour lit travel It furnished in the an nouncement that the German gov ernment has Just completed an agreement under which Americana taking their ears to Germany may secure all the necessary driving cre dentials from the American Automo bile aMrlatlon In advance of sailing. A ilmilar agreement la already in effect between the A. A. A. and the Italian government. In advising the A. A. A. that his government had approved the new agreement. Dr. Hans Luther, German ambAJiftndor to the United States, aald: "I un confident that thla arrane ment will greatly facilitate and ex pedite the clearance at Hamburg and Brcmerhaven of American tourists, cars and you nmy be sure that the German officials will ex tend every courtesy to your members and countrymen. May I take this opportunity to extend to your mem- j bers through you a most cordial In vitation to vlalt Germany during 1935. A moat hospitable welcome awaits them In my country-" Outlining the terms of the agree ment, Thos. P. Henry of Detroit, Mich., president of the A. A. A., aald the A. A. A. forrinn travel division, under the direction of the German consulate general, will issue the re quired driving permits, circulation certiriratea and German Internationa) license plates. He continued: "Agreements already worked out by tlw A. A. A. with foreign govern- j ments and foreign motor cluhs make It possible for motorists to obtain . customs documents prior to depart ne and cross borders with a mini- mum of red tape. The arrangements , with Germany and Italy are further ateps In facilitating travel by motor In foreign lands. "Ability to secure both customs papers and driving credentials be fore leaving their home shores gives motorists a certainty of freedom from any annoying walta after their vaca tion baa begun because of possible delays In receiving their motoring permits and papers. "Motor touring to distant countries now is faster and more pleasant than ever before and the facility of this type of travel, as well as the reduced rates now In effect, has caused a re markable Increase in the number of cars shipped abroad. The A. A. A. foreign travel division, which han dles the major portion or all cars transported to other lands for vaca tion touring, reports a 60 per cent Increase In business during the first few months of 1936 as compared with the corresponding period last year, indicating the probability that the approaching travel season will break all former records." The AUTO WAY Br Cvrll Sander ! a large, low priced car purely for . touring purposes. However, It may also be used for taxi and funersl service. Real home cooking at the Hotel Holland Coffee Shop. Try It once and you be the Judge. Popular prices The Plymouth Motor company re cently announced two new additions to Ha former line, these cars were the convertible coupe, and the con bertlble, commercial sedan. However, the motor world received still an other surprise from Plymouth Just a few days ago when It announced that a seven -passenger sedan and a seven-passenger touring sedan would soon be available. This is very un usual, for the most part because It has become an accepted fact that If you want a seven-passenger car you must pay around 93.000 for It at the least. But this car will de- liver for around I,100 according to local dealers. For general character istics of design, this new model Is very similar to all of the other 1930 Plymouths, but of course It is con siderably longer. The wheelbase on this new model Is one hundred twenty-eight Inches, which puts It up Into the really large car class. Even though this car Is called a seven passenger sedan It will seat eight passengers with comparative ease. The arrangement la the same as the conventional sedan except that two auxiliary scats are placed between tbe front and back seats. The two aux-j diary seats fold very neatly into the back of the front seat when not In use and leave ample space for any j type of baggage If dealred. We un derstand that there Is also a lug gage compartment behind the rear sent In these models which will ac commodate most of the luggage one would ordinarily need. These models were not originally Intended for tho Amerlran market. They were in the first place designed and produced for the foreign market where the seven -passe tiger car plays quite an Important part, but the Plymouth dealers heard about it and Immediately sent In so many orders that It has now been placed on the market as a standard Plymouth model. The main use for the car will probably be for the large fam ily, or for the car buyer that wants We have Just received literature and details on the British car. Standard. , We do not know whether this la the ' car we referred to In a recent art ; tele or not. The car which we men 1 tloned and which supposedly Is on j the American market was called the f Standard Swallow; however. It la pos sible that It was an entirely differ ent make. We are sure of one thing, however and that Is in our opinion, this British csr certainly cannot com pare with any American car of com parable price. In the first place, rnost of the models are so small that there are only one or two cars In the Unit ed States with which they could be compared. The closest comparison would probably be the Willys We have found that for the moat part they are very small in size and very large In price. To bear out our statements the following facts may be of use: the wheelbase of the smallest car Is S& Inches, the price 1725.00, and the horsepower Is 23; the wheelbase of the largest car is 123 Inches, the price 92.500.00, and the horsepower Is 561 Also, the maxi mum speed of the smalt car Is 58 and the maximum of the largest car Is 701 There is little doubt, many other things are to be taken Into consideration, but we are sure that even after everything was measured that the English car, for the most part, would be found drastically "wanting" as far as the American public la concerned. WILL MEET LOCAL IL Miss Vaal Stark, director of Girl Scout work, in the Big Tree Region, which Includes Washington, Oregon, California and Nevada, will , be In Medford May 2 to confer with local council members and lead era and to meet those who are Interested ' in Girl Scout activities. There will be an all day meeting In the court house- auditorium with a covered dish luncheon at 12 o'clock. Mlsa Stark will speak at the morning session beginning at 10:30 on the problems and progress of the Girl yt tte omit pzice ftec ... BUT IT PUTS YOU IN THE BIG-CAR CLASS The Hudson Motor company added another feature to its cap a while back or perhaps we should say they added several feathers. Anyway, a few days ago a stock Hudson eight was driven off a dealers floor In southern California and taken to Muroc drv lake where it was to be put through some speed tests. As you may recall Sir Malcom Campbell recently brok? some speed records at Daytona Beach' with one of the new Hudson cars, but this time the car was put to really serious work and proceeded to break nbout every record from one to a thousand miles In Its class. We understand that even Campbell's record was broken along with the many others that fell as the Hudson eight proceeded on Its way. One thing that we can certainly say about the Hudson Motor company, and that Is they are certainly showing the public that Its cars have real per formance. We understand that one of the chief reasons for ihe Hudson and Terraplane performance Is the weight per horsepower. In these cars the weight has been kept down to the very limit which will still per mit a maximum of safety. By getting rid of this excessive weight the car has less to pull per horsepower and of course the higher speed Is the result. Another feature which Hud son has been putting to the front recently Is the all steel construction of the car the body is steel fron floor to roof, and from bumper t bumper. The wood bracings and rr InforcementA which are common li the much publicized composition bodies have been either entirely elim inated or replaced by steel bracings According to Hudson engineers this contributes to a much safer and stronger body. j Ally. . iiul ts.iWa I enrd In Girl Scout activities to at tend this meeting.
