uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil

Harold Burton received wordt from
Kansas April 11, that his mother
was very low and to come home at
once. Mr. Burton has been driving
the school bus. Ben Oswald has taken
the Job of driving the bus.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ball of Reese
creek visited Mr. and Mrs. Wallace
McDowell April 14.
Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Knighton and
son of near Grants pass spent Sun
day here with Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Lindsay.

Antelope Literary club met on April
13. A good program was given. Alter
the program and business meeting
refreshments were served. The pro
gram Included: readings by Clause
Charley, Annabello Rlggs, and Aud
rey Lindsay; music was furnished by
trio, Gertrude Stanley, piano, Bert-
land Stanley, saxaphone, MIsa Grace
Holman, violin. Several musical sel
ections were given by the Harwood
sisters, violins, and Olive Eldrldge,
piano. They also gave several num
bers on the tikelele, which were very
much enjoyed by all and It Is hoped
they will come again. Ruth Carson
gave a tap dance, accompanied on
the piano by Phyllis Hedgepath.
Mrs, John Rader, mother of Mrs.
Ina Stanley, Is reported aa having
the mumps. Everyone wishes for a
speedy recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Stlmpson of
the 401 ranch entertained April 7
with a birthday dinner In honor
of Mrs. Stlmpson's mother, Mrs. J.
E. Rummel. The table was arranged
with beautiful flowers on the oc
casion. Mrs. Rummel received many
nice presents. Those present were: Mr,
and Mrs. E. M. Clark, A. E. Moore,
C. E. Snyder, all of Cenm'l Point;
Mrand Mrs. E. M, Rummel and
daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mil
lard and children and ElUs Ray, all
of Medford, and the host and host

Ashland placed first In the district
typing contest held at the Ashland
high school, Saturday morning, wun
a second class school. Phoenix, plac
ing second. The Ashland team aver
age was 50.4. Phoenix averaged 60. B.
The cup for secondary schools waa
won by Phoenix for the second time.
Other schools competing were
Grants Pass, Central Point, Sama
Valley, Gold Hill, Butte Falls, ana
Jacksonville.
Mildred Martin, second-year stu
dent, Ashland, was the most accu
rate typist In the contest making
six errors and a net rate of 64
Gweneth Poling, first-year student.
Phoenix, was the most accurate
writer with eight errors. Her net
rate was 65.
Individual rankings. Ignoring first
and aecond class division groupings,
placed Frances Whitehead, Ashland,
first among second-year students,
with Mildred Martin, Ashland. Juno
Moore, Gold Hill, and Naomi Smith.
Grants Pass, taking second, third
and fourth places. Among first-year
students. Gweneth Poling, Phoenix,
was first, Roma McReynolds, Phoe
nix, second and Gladys Llnlnger,

were third and fourth.
PASSES IN PORTLAND
Word has been received here of
the death of Mrs. Laura K. Goulder
In Portland, April 7. Mrs. Goulder
was a resident of Medford from 190fl
to 013 when her husband, the lata
W, T. Goulder. was pastor of the
M. E. Church, South.
She endeared herself to both young
and old by her graclotis and un
selfish ways while mistress of the
parsonage and had many frlonda
hem. For the last several years her
church membership has been wltU
the local church.
She Is survived by her son, Wm,
T. Goulder, and daughter, Mrs. Al
berta Arbuckle; granddaughter, Miss
Rosalie Goulder, and two grnndsons,
Jimmle and Bobble Arbuckle, all of
Portland.

ward a showdown today with a thou
sand Ohio penitentiary prisoners who
refused to work In the prison shopa
as a protest against policies of the
board of paroles.
The guards did not accompany
Woodard behind the walls as he ap
peared before the striking prisoners
to reiterate previous advice that they
return to their tasks.

in mt. angel death
PORTLAND, , April 17. (P) The
death yesterday of Mra. Josephine
Fisher, 33, of Mount Angel, was re
vealed by an autopsy today to have
rtsulted from trichinosis, believed to
have been contracted by eating Im
properly prepared summer sausage.
Mrs. Fisher's husband, Edward
Fisher of Mount Angel, died last Sat
urday. About ten other persons In
the neighborhood who ate the meat
are 111, the coroner said.
