Jf Golden Anniversary Celebrated at Home Mr. and Mrs. Hawk Just 80 jmr ago laat ThuriKlay Mr. and Mr. B. M. Hwlt of 701 Wtit 11th street were married In Punxsu tawney, Pa. Their golden wedding an nlvaerary waa celebrated at their home Thuraday evening with at membera of their family present and 31 gueatt. The celebration was a happy one for Mr. and Mrs. Hawk, who have lived In Medlord, with the exception of seven years spent at their home stead near Butt Falls, steadily since 1905. They received many lovelj gifts, and tha rooms of the attractive old home were filled with flowers given them by relatives and close friends. Dressed In their old wedding clothes, Mr. and Mrs. Hawk presided at the tabla where a large anniversary cake waa cut. Alter tha refreshments were served, there was entertainment dur ing tha evening. The guests Joined In alnglng songs. Rev. W. B. Baird gava some reedlnga and Dr. Charlea T. Sweeney spoke. Mr. and Mrs. Haw have seven chil dren, all of whom live In and near Med ford. They were all present ex cept Harry E. Hawk, who waa called out of the city oii business. Those present were: Mrs. Mabel Wright. ok west Eleventh; Mrs. Hazel Van dermark, 84S Apple street: Mrs. Cath erine McKlnney of the Barry addi tion; Mrs. Anna Davis of Columbus avenue, Norman, of Talent, and Sha ron of West Main street. Another son, Russell 8 died In Prance during the war. Ten grandchildren were all also present except Leila VandermarVt. who la taking nurses' training In Port land. The guests present were: Dr. and Mrs. Bweney, Rev. and Mra. Balrd. Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Krauss, Mr. and Mra. J. H. Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Currier, Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Harrison, Margaret and Kenneth Har rison, Mr. and Mra. Fleming. Mra. Bertha Tlmerman, Mrs. Ruth Bolton and daughter, Mrs. stlnson and Don Marvin. Gleaner Class Will Have Dessert Luncheon Mrs. A. P. Harold Brown a,nd Mrs. Richard Payne entertained at a bridge luncheon. About 30 enjoyed the entertain ment given Tuesday, which la ladles' day at the club. - Bridge Party For Teachers Is Held W. A. Gates Home Mrs. W. A. Gates and her daugh ter, Mary Anne, entertained the teachers of Roosevelt grade school at their home, 31 Crater Lake avenue, Friday evening at a bridge party which has been given annually at the Gates home since Mary Anne entered RooseVeR school. Three tables of bridge were In play at tables decorated In white and yel low, a color scheme that was carried out In bouqueu of flowers about the rooms. Prizes were received by Miss Gertrude Parker, Miss Sarah Van Me ter and Mrs. Ethel Wlllltts. The following teachers were present: Misses Van Meter, Eleanor Curry, Louise Hanson, Gertrude Parker. Gould will give highlights from "Women and Missions" and Laura Bailey will give interesting anecdotes regarding various missionaries. Mrs. Walter Frazer Brown, with a large attendance of members and visitors- The study topic for April was Mexico. Mrs. Alex Sparrow, who had recently returned from a three week trip to that land of enchantment, entertained the club with an Inter esting account of her trip. She re peatedly stressed the courtesy of all whom she had occasion to con tact, either socially or In a busi ness way. Of absorbing interest was her description of inspiring scen ery, as they sped over wide, hard- surfaced mountain roads, of the beauty and grandeur of churches and cathedrals with their priceless paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and hand carved wood work and of pyramids with terraces and wonder ful carved stairway. Mrs. Sparrow also told of her meeting with the president of Mex ico at Mexico City, and of his inter est In and plans for the betterment of his country and its people. His plans Include better education of the masses, distribution of land, minimum wage laws, higher stand ards of 'living, improved foreign relations and religious freedom, Mrs. Sparrow said. Mrs. Newton Chaney reviewed "Old Mother Mexico," by Harry Carre. He portrays the tragedies, Mrs. Chaney said, aa well as the charms of that land of high adventure, contrasts and sudden change or scenes. Mrs. Chaney's first hand knowl edge of Mexico made the review exceedingly interesting, as well as Instructive. She told of the early discoverers, the development of the country, and the characteristics or Us people. She stressed the authors glowing tribute to the cruel but courageous Apache Indians. Also Father Keno's beneficient work with more than fifty missions to his credit, and civilization's appreciation of Mexico's gift of beautiful shrines, churches and cathedrals. She also gave glimpses of the lives of the peons and of the hacienda of that Interesting and colorful country. The topic for study in May is Central America.
