EFFORT 10 SLASH STEEL HEADS' PAY Schwab, Grace Criticized for Taking Enormous Bonuses Widow Says Priest Knows His Subject NEWARK, N. J., April 10. (AP) Small stockholders of the Bethlehem Steel corporation today attacked the high sslarlrs paid to Charlee M. Behwab, chairman of ths board: Eu gene G. Grace, president, and other officers, but retired In defeat when their motion to limit officers' sala ries to 30 per cent of the 1034 proflta was beaten by a vote of 2,370,220 shares to 335. Tha criticism of Schwab and the others was voiced at the 30th annual meeting of the stockholders, and was an echo of the legal efforts In recent years, first to restrict the size oi bonuses paid the officers and later to force them to return soma of the money thua awarded. Today's onset came after Schwab and Grace had spoken with enthusi asm of ths future. Three Draw WM.000 Leopold B. Coshland, New York, first of the stockholders, said there are 44.000 men getting 67o an hour "by the aweat of their browa" In the plants of the corporation, while three officers draw 488,000 In salarlea. The next person to criticise the of ficers was a widow, Mrs. Mary Galla gher, of New York. "No wonder that Father Coughlln preaches about blood money," she cried. "He knows what he la talking about; there has been too much of this, "Here we are without a cent while you b to re up millions. "Mr. Grace ahould remember there re no pockets In shrouds," she added. Orace, speaking concerning tha sal ary paid to Schwab, said the chair man of the board waa an asset to the Industry "a real asset for tha $260, 000 he received a year." "Yea," interrupted Coshland, "but there cornea a time when a man out lives his usefulness." Shame on Grace Referring to the salarlea of the three officers, Coshland aald: "It Isn't fair, Just or honorable and If I were Mr. Orace I would hide my face In ahame. Such things make a man's blood booll." : Coshland quoted Schwab aa aaylng aome time ago he waa giving up many of his activities because of advancing age, but that Bethlehem Steel "would remain nearest my heart." "Ha made a alight mistake In anat omy," Coshland said, "because he's held It nearest his stomsch and we have been his meal ticket." Phone 642. We'll haul away your refuse. ORD DEALERS AUTO COMPANY, Medford, Oregon COST MUCH LESS IN CURRENT YEAR AAA Officials Estimate $550,000,000 Will Be Paid to Farmers Will Be $20,000,000 Under '34 By HTBPHEN McDONOrOH Associated Press Htaff Writer WASHINGTON, April 10. (AP) AAA officials estimated today they will pay out approximately S550.00O, 000 to American farmers for taking part In the 1035 crop adjustment pro gram. This Is $20,000,000 less than the payments for 1034. At the same time officials Indicated there was a growing sentiment within the argr (culture adjustment adminis tration to develop a new type of pro duction control which would be baa ed on regions rather than on crops. Benefit and acreage rental pay ments already made to farmers are now approaching the bllllon-dollar mark. Reduced payments this year will come largely In the corn-hogs and tobacco programs, where restric tions havo bc:n eased. Cotton farmers, however, will re ceive more than they did last year, officials estimated. On the basis of present contracts, AAA officials esti mate 126,006,000 will go Into the southland aa compared with $115,- 000,000 for 1034. Money to make these payments Is raised through processing taxes which ara now being attacked In congress. AAA officials generally express the view that the current programs as emergency and temporary adjust ments to remove heavy crop surpluses which existed at the time the AAA waa created should now be replaced with permanent adjustments In each region. Cotton, wheat and other farmers signed two-year reduction contracts which will expire In 1030. Definite regional programs, officials said. might be ready for consideration then. FINE STAG PARTY The Active club met Inst night for the regular Tuesday night meeting at the Hotel Med ford for one of the most successful stag parties In the club's history. Having lost the re cent membership drive contest, the team captained by Chet Hubbard paid for the dinner and entertainment. The entertainment was furnished by Johnny Eads. a clever young ma gician, and Ted Flschback. who sang several popular songs, accompanying himself on the guitar. One particu larly puzzling trick by Eads was mak ing a four-inch block of wood dis appear from his hands and reappear In a silk hat several feet away. Guests at the meeting were Harold Mitchell of the Pacific States mine, and John Connor, local orchardlst. The meeting being an Informal one, regular business waa aet aalde, but committees are working on the spring opening being sponsored by the club on the klttenball team that the Ao tlvlans will enter In the twilight league. 11 want a new 1 ! i ROOMINESS It's longer, wider and roomier.
