East meets west In the great ex hibition halls, tor here buyers come from Peru and China, Canada and Syria, France and Australia, to window-shop and place orders. They are guided through two miles ol stands by a corps of Interpreters, and the catalogue Is printed In nine languages. "The commercial London, which few tourists ever see, boasts many fine exhibition halls." Bays a bul letin from the Washington, D. C, headquarters of the National Geo graphic society. "The best known In Oiympla, while a short distance away are the White City and Earl's Court. They form a little city or spectacu lar show places not far west of Lon don's aristocratic 'west end.' Six Acres I'nder Glass. "Oiympla, a huge, glass-roofed building covering six acres. Is the scene of two outstanding events of the spring In London the royal mili tary tournament and the horse show. This year furniture trades, Weal homes, terrier club, confectionery, ra- dlj, shipping, engineering, and auto mobile exhibits; the royal horticul tural society's flower show, and i circus and fair wilt be held there. "In near-by White City are held, under floodlights, rul:i football games, and other athletic contests, and greyhound racing, besides msny exhibitions. The huge Earl's Court exhibition hall Is now closed. "Drab Islington, one of the most populous suburbs of northern Lon don, houses royal agricultural nan, built In 1861. Cattle, horse and dog shows, used-car, shoe and leather. and brewers exhibits and public works displays spread over Its three acres of space, while at Christmas time, there is fun snd laughter at the inevitable circus and world's fair. Recalls "Century of Profress" "In northwest London, a little sta tion called Wembley park conjures lip ghosts of a great exhibition, for here, In 1924 and 1926, was held the British empire exhibition. Called Wembley" for short, It was to Lon don what "A Century of Progress' was to Chicago, but all that remains to day of Its halls. Oriental temples. artificial lakes, fountains, and walks, Is the empire stadium. This huge bowl Is hall as large again as the Colosseum at Rome, and has a seat ing capacity of 100,000. "When the empire starltum Is filled for England's great annual soccer game the cup final the spectator Is treated to a thrilling sight. The king and the prince Qf Wales present cups and medals to the teams and players, military bands play stirring tunes, thousands oi voices Join In community Binging, airplanes zoom overhead, and Eng land becomes as wildly excited as the United States does during the world series. " ' "Before the World war, the cup final was played In the grounds of the Crystal Palace, the most Impos ing and romantic exhibition hall in London. It Is a mammoth, dratty edifice ol glass and Iron, 1608 feet long, consisting of a great central hall with aisles and two transepts. At either end Is a water tower 282 i feet high. "The Crystal Palace was originally built In Hyde Park for the great ex hibition of 1801. but three years later It was removed to Its present site on a hill at Upper Norwood. dominating southeast London. For decades. It has blended education with the amusement of side-shows. exhibitions, concerts, organ recitals. and firework displays. During the war It was used for trslning the royal naval division and was nick named 'H. M. S. Crystal. Palace. HYnm 1020 to 1923 It housed the imperial war museum. "The palace now Is used for flower. dog and poultry shows. As side at tractions it has a movie nouse, out board motor racing on the lake, and thrilling motorcycle races on its dirt track. Radio research Is carried on In one of Its flanking towers. The 200 acres of grounds are a quaint mixture of ancient and modern with tennis courts, walks, old classical statuary, row boats, and life-size j models of prehistoric animala In i their geological formations. The tri ennial Handel festivals, reminding American visitors of the famous Bach festivals at Bethlehem. Penn.. sre held in the Handel orchestra auditorium, which can accommodate j 4000 person. "Exhibitions fascinate the British. Thev find In them gay spectacles j and displays portraying their man ners, modes, customs, and habits The great exhibition, however, was a little too much for cnaries uicxens, for he wrote to a friend on July 11. 1851: 'I find I am used up by the exhibition. I don't ssy there Is nothing In it there's too much. I've only been twice; so msny tnmgs oe wlldered me ... It Is a dreadful thing to he obliatd to be false, but J when any one says: Have you seen ? I sav vcs. because If I dn't, I know ! he'll explain It. and I can't bear that'."
