With the cry "Increase the Deficit"
the Jackson county chamber of com
merce swung Into action today on
& now flv-yr program to dredge
Bear creek to the sea. so that battle
veawla of the United StaM fleet can
proceed up as far aa Medford to
participate In Armlxtlce Day pro
grama here in the future.
The new program, one of the most
comprehensive to be undertaken In
the history of the chamber, li ex
pected to start a boom In thla city,
and launch one of the greatest ex
pansions In the history of the Pa
cific coast.
"For many years," said A. H. Ban
well, manager of the chamber, "It
ha been a public disgrace that this
elty has had no battleships upon
which to sprinkle flowers from the
Bear creek briage." Many letters from
citl7ns, prominent and otherwise,
gave rtae to the great project, when
the public gave Indication that It
would no longer tolerate the shame- ,
fui situation. "Mwlford has been In I
the back seat long enough," said j
W. S. Bolger. former president of j
the chamber, thumping the table-
Another project of tremendous lm-
porta nee to this community to be
launched will be the construction of
a tram-way, starting at the rim of
Crater Ike, clearing the coast range,
and swooping down upon the coast
at a point near Gold Beach, where
a huge amuaement park la to be
built at public expense. The park,
which will be the largest of lta kind
tn the world, has been tentatively
named New Medford, and contracts
for the work will be let In the near
future, Is was learned today.
New stream-lined cars will be built
by the Boeing airplane factory,
which has Indicated a desire to
aurt a factory here. The cars, which
will run on the Crater-lake-to-the-
aea tram, will be capable of attain-
lri even , greater speeds than those
attained by high school students on
South Oakdsle, if plans of the com I
pany for new models, now In the ;
wind-tunnel stage of development, i
are completed. j
In order to clear the air for the
huge caravans of Incoming settlers,
work la to begin In the next day or
two on blasting off 800 feet from the
top of Roxy Ann, which has been
condemned aa a hazard to airplanes.
"What a day for Medford I" cho
rused Banwell and Bolger to the re
porter as the latter fled from the
scene dlazlly. but carefully avoiding
a plump and Inviting looking purne
lying on the akidway that serves for
a front step to the chamber of
fices. He bit on that one two years
ago and hasn't lived It down en- ,
