OF HEALTH GROUP
Dr. Harvey Wood of Anhland. Dr.
Dwtftht H. Flndley and Dr. A. F. wai
ter Kme were speakers at the m
monthly meeting of the jackaon
County Health association yesterday
afternoon at the court house auai
torhim. The meeting was attended
by 45. Tea was wired by the Gold
Hill ladlea, who were hostesses.
Taking aa his subject the heart and
It diseases, Dr. Wood gave an en
lightening talk. Ha said that heart
diseases have led the death rate since
1920 and are increasing In fatality
rapidly, being responsible for one out
of every five deaths.
He divided the study of the heart
Into three periods, the pre-sclence
period, period of scientific Investiga
tion, and period of scientific applica
tion. In reviewing the period of scientific
Investigation, Dr. Woods said Harvey
was the first to prove circulation of
blood, In an experiment with the
body of a hanged man conducted In
1815. His rrport on this discovery Is
considered a classic today, Dr. Woods
aid.
The speaker gava modern unfavor
able living conditions as the cavwe
of the high death rate from heart
disease.
Dr. Flndley' subject was sex edu
cation. In which he declared that an
appalling situation exists, chiefly In
tht better class of families. He said
that In most Instances parent arc
to blame for lack of proper sex edu
cation among children. He advised
parents to better Inform themselves
and to conBUlt the family physician
in sex problems Just as in other
health problems.
Dr. Krcsse's subject was childhood
problems. In an Interesting view of
the difficulties confronting the mod
ern parent In properly rearing chil
dren, he aald that fear la the great
est cause for misbehavior.
YOUNG DWARFED GIRL
ROSTOV. Ttuasla (XTP) Dwarf
children may grow to normal height
In the future as a result of an ex
periment by Prof. Nikolai Bogoraas
of the Rostov Surgical clinic
Recently a girl, who appeared to
be four yenrs old, was brought to
the clinic. Actually be was 11 and
a pupil In the fourth grade. Her sub
normal size waa due to the under
development of the hypopheae gland,
an appendix of the brain, which In
fluenced growth.
Bogoraz took the hypopheae gland
from the head of a young man who
had died In an automobile accident
an hour nud a hnlf earlier. He tested
the blood of both bodies to deter
mine their consanKUlnlty than trans
ferred the gland Into the left
shoulder artery of the dwarf girl.
Six months later tha chtld had
grown eight centimeters taller,
A second similar transfusion In
creased her height by six centi
meters more. Her growth Is still
continuing.
BogoraE waa cautious In speaking
of the result of his experiment.
Saying:
"From tha broad viewpoint of
medical science, of course, a few
uch successful experiments are not
conclusive. But the experiment has
xoeptional importance."
