Conan Doyle, Amundsen and Greeley Speak in Eerie Tones As Ship Flies in Darkness Above New York Hy MAX HILL Associated Presa staff Writer ff NEW YORK. March 23. (AP) Eerie voices of undetermined origin, wait ing through the In icy blackness of a darkened cabin plane as it soared 4000 feet above New York, gave spir itualists a topic of paramount Inter est today. The voices Identified themselves as belonging to the spirits of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creater of Sherlock Holmes and a firm disciple of spirit ualism: Ronald Amundsen, explorer; Horace Greeley, crusading newspaper editor of a past era, and Lincoln Beachey and Floyd Bennett, aviators. Avoided Interference Attempted for tne first time so far as the participants knew, the airplane seance took place last night through efforts of a group of New York spirit ualists to oveieome "Interference." The Interference, they explained, sometimes handicaps their attempts to contact the spirit world. Fourteen spiritualists were In the plane, from which all light had been shut off by newspapers tacked across the windows. After the liner was In the air. Miss Maina Tafe, the medium, suggested "Everybody sing." All did. Voice In Trumpet . j soon an eanmy ana mm voice (the source as yet undetermined) came from one of the two aluminum trumpets in the aisle. It said it was Sir Arthur, and described the experi ence of talking with persons In an airplane as "more faVitastle than death itself." "Floyd Bennett" was heard as the plane roared over the Brooklyn air port named In his honor. The next voice, ascribed, to Lincoln Beachey, aaid the spirit of Wilbur Wright was standing beside, him. Aithur Ford, a friend of the late Bir Arthur, said after the seance he vas sure "that was Sir Arthur's voice." The vioce which claimed to be that ef Amundsen came through without much trace of accent, although Amundsen's voice was marked by his early years in Norway. Tells of Death This voice, In answer to a question, told how Amundsen met death on a rescue flight In the Arctic, a tragedy still unexplained by history. "We became lost in the fog over trackless wastes of Ice," intoned the weird vice. "It was Just as well that J went when I did. My work was done. I have been down with Byrd In Little America, watching over him-." John Goldstrom, spokesman for the spiritualists, termed the venture a ''complete success." I 4- VOCATIONAL TALK AT 20-30 MEET The first of a series of vocational talks was given at the weekly din ner meeting of 20-30 club at Hotel Med ford last night by Del Cox of the Toggery. His subject was the growth of the clothing Industry, which he describ ed interestingly showing the Influ ence of customs on the sale of clothing. Final plans were made at the meet ing for the first annual 20-30 club dance, which will be held tomorrow night at St. Mark's Guild hall. This dance Is to be held each year In the future. There was a good attendance at the meeting. Guests were Ltnn Mas wy, Orvllle (Shorty) Wilson, Wilbur Tucker, and George Honselman, mem ber of Rotary club, who attended In an advisory capacity. Preparations are underwiy at Sen ior high school for the puhllcitlon of the annual Girls' league "d'.tlon of Hi-Tlmes. which will b p-iblished Thursday, April 4. as a feature of Girls' league week. The paper will be distributed following the tea which la to be given In the afternoon. Features of the edition will' hi stories on activities of the league during the year, and several special columns. Among these will &e style columns on both clothlru: and hair dressing, featuring Easter clo'hes. A beauty hint column will be Included. as will eclumns In art a and etiquette for both boys and girls. Special editorials will he written, and the paper will Include a la.-y? sport section on spring football and tennis.
