Main POTSHERDS PROVE BIBLE'S ACCURACY DECLARES EXPERT Inscriptions Date Back to Time of Jeremiah Find Will Remove Skepticism of Biblical Accounts JERUSALEM, March 15. (AP) (Palcor Agency) Professor Harry Torcznyer, expert on seme tic lang uages of the Hebrew university of Jeruttalem, said today that 12 in scribed potsherds found several days ago at Tel Adduwelr, ancient Lach- lsh, by J. L. Starkey, head of the Wellcome Archaeological research ex pedition, date baclc definitely to the time of Jeremiah, 2500 years ago. , Professor Torcznyer said a remark- I able aspect of the script was that It appears to be written In ordinary In It, such as might be used today and that the discovery Is "the most valu abue find ever made In th period of the first temple." Dr- Btarkey has entrusted the task of deciphering the Important frag ments to Professor Torcznyer. Proves Itlble's Arcurary The latter stated that the discovery on the site of ancient Lachlsh, great est fortress In the southern area of the kingdom of Jtidah, adds Irrefu table testimony of tho accuracy of the Bible In Its account of the per iod of kings. It was declared that this newest find, enriching the facts already assembled by 'archeology, will go a far way toward causing a revis-, Ion of tho skeptical attitude toward the biblical accounts which prevails In some quarters. Lachlsh was the fortress which of fered resistance to Nebuchednezar, king of Bubylon, when he swept down upon Judah after King Zedeklah had renounced the allegiance of his king- j dom to Babylon. During the reigns of Joslah, Jchoahaz, Jcholaknm, Jo-j holchln until the days of Zedeklah, covering the period between 838 B. C and 693 B. C. Throw New Light According to Professor Torcznyer' potsherds are likely to throw extra-! ordinary light on the existing knowl edge of Jeremiah's time. The Starkey discovery represents one of the few extrablbllcal documents on scripture. No archaeologist had believed that the humid earth of Palestine would he able to preserve any document through the centuries, although the dry sand of Egypt had caused the preservation of a number of Impor tant writings. Professor Torcznyer Is now engaged In preparing a lecture on the sig nificance of the find conjointly with Dr. Starkey, head of the expedition, which Is financed by sir Henry Well come of London. The lecture Is scheduled for April 20. The possibility that the potsherds Spring Coats Checks, tweeds and novelty itonlens. All silk lined. Nfw prim styli details. Lachlsh was the city to which Amazlah. king of Judah, fled when a conspiracy was raised against him In Jerusalem fol lowing his disastrous war against Je hoash, king of Israel. The conspira tors followed and assassinated him In Lachlsh, as the story la told in second Kings. This was In the mid dle of the eighth century, B. C.
