It was 76 years ago come next month that she came rampaging up river from her birthplace at Des chutes, blazing the way on the north west's two mightiest streams for In land navigation. They still tell of how her builders, R. R. Thompson and E. F. Coe, cashed In on her and made a fortune out of the 110-fot steamer. Freight at fHO Ton. They had been hauling freight be tween Fort Walla Walla and Celllo In Indian-powered batteaux for $100 a ton. Placing the Colonel Wright, christened for the military com mandant at The Dalles, on the river, they immediately out the rate to $80; made three tripe a week to Celllo, and loaded passenger in Portland just 30 hours from Walla Walla, by transferring them to lower Columbia steamers at the falls. The northwest was enjoying a hangover from the Buchanan admin istration goom of '58, and Coe and Thompson waxed rich and ambiti ous. They sent the steamer up the Snake on a oO-mlle reconnolterli trip, and made so much money that they added the steamboat Tenlno to the service In I860. Conquered Clearwater. Next spring they sent the Colonel ! Wright up the Snake, Into Idaho;,; where she conquered the swift surge 1 of the Clearwater river to within two miles of Its forks. The current was so strong, she made the 300-mile trip In less than. 34 hours, piloted by Oapt. William B. Gray of Pasco. Oray made the first steamboat landing at Lewlston, Idaho. Coe and Thompson had that ace of pioneer navigators of uncharted northwest rivers, Capt. Leonard White. In charge of the Colonel Wright, and they paid htm 9500 a month big money even in Buchanan boom days But it was unaer Capt. Tom Stump that the Colonel Wright made her last and most sensational voyage in then parts. It was In the spring of '65, and she was eight days bat tling 10 miles of Snake river cur rent In an attempt to pass the rapids fcbove Farewell Bend in the Snake river canyon. Disgusted. Captain Stump turned her around and the Snake awept her back to Lewlston In under five hours. Trip of No Value. Captain Tom reported his perilous expedition had no practical value. But he bad taken a steamboat far ther Into the heart of the northwest wilderness than anyone before, and few since. The Oregon Steam Navigation com pany retired the Colonel Wright that autumn and she was torn to pieces In a ship-breaker's yard downriver. And Captain White and Captain Stump? Captain White pioneered in the upper Willamette, took the Cay use above Lewlston to the north of tne Orand Ronde and opened navigation farther north and east than ever be fore. He died In Portland In 1870. Captain Stump collapsed and died In the pilothouse of the Spokane, near Rlparla, a few miles downriver from Flagpole, In '81. And Captain Gray? Re lived out his life st Pasco after pioneering on the Stlekeen and taking the City of nieneburg from Pasco to the mouth of the Okanogan, first craft through Rock Island rapids.
