The man stopped at the home of William Chapman In that neighbor hood Thursday night, and asked for food.' Chapman fed the man, wnere tipon he fell asleep In a chair. Chap man put him to bed, and the next day attempted to question him. All that he could learn was that the man was on his way to Klamath Falls, and that he had been In Jail In Medford, and waa afraid to return to this city. The possibility that the jnan may have been John Laverdln, missing Cordova, Ala&ka, fisherman, whose knapaack waa found yesterday near the Myrtle Creek highway bridge, waa being Investigated today by the euthorltlea. Fire, believed to have been of In cendiary origin, at 8 o'clock Frldsy niht completely destroyed the large barn and pump house of the WUi Hansen orchard Just north of the Bear Creek orchards on the Pacific highway. Orchard equipment, Includ ing picking ladders, boxes, smudge pot and tools were a complete loss, as were two trucks and two passenger cara parked in the barn. Two tractors were aaved. The loss waa estimated at 10,000. portly covered by Insur ance, by Hansen. An abortive attempt to set fire to the barn last week failed, according to state police, when an unidenti fied lncendlarlst built a fire under the hood of one of the trucks, after disabling cars parked on both aides, to prevent removal. The fire was built on the opposite side of the motor from the carburetor, so the fire gained no headway, authorities state. The Friday fire started about 8:00 o'clock, and employes at the orchard, running to the scene,' could smell gasoline fumes. It is believed that the gasoline was sprayed onto hay stored In the barn, and then touched off. . The fire gained rapid headway, and soon spread to the pump house. A gnrage In close proximity to that building was aaved, after only slightly cnarring one end. A large crowd of people, attracted to the scene by brllllnnt reflection of the flames on the night sky. gathered to watch the fire, which destroyed the barn In less than two hours, although It waa still amoul- dprlng In ruins Saturday morning.
