He referred to the re cent agitation In Jackson county and Its control, which he said waa largely through the exforta of the chamber of commerce. CCC Hrad Heard, Major Clare H. Armstrong, com manding officer of Medford CCC dls. trtct, waa the next speaker, with "The Chamber's CCC Program" his subject. He spoke ot the tremendous amount of money that la brought Into the county by the CCC dis quiet, declaring that each year ap proximately B48.OO0 la poured out through the sslarlea of the head quartera staff alone. He thanked the chamber for lta efforts In develop ing the district. B. B. Harder, president of Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, was the next speaker, talking on "The Chamber's Housing Act Program." With graphic figures he outlined the purpose of the better housing cam paign, pointing out that through development of new homea In the nation, 12.000.000 men would be employed, which he aald would largely take care of the nation's re lief problem. O. O. Alenderfer, chairman of the chamber's five-year future program, waa the last speaker, reviewing the work of his committee. He said that the program Includes every phase of community activity, and that results will be nottcable soon. WATERSAGCEPTS v IN K. F. R. F. Mr. Waters will leave lnv mediately to assume his new position with a firm that was formerly Klamath Falls branch of Uttrell Parts company. Mr. Waters' family will continue to reside In Medford until after the preaent school term. R. F. Waters has been Identified with Medford business activities for nearly six years, and before assum ing management of the Post Office Super 8er7lce Station he filled the position of manager of the Firestone Tire and Rubber company's Medford store. Whittle, will be held at the Elks temple at Ashland tonight, starting at 8:45 o'clock. An Invitation is extended to all Shrlners and their lady guests to at tend and help make the event a gala one. The program will Include a band concert, drills by the Hlllah patrol, a grand march, a buffet luncheon and a grand prize award. William H. McNalr is general chair man for the event. Many are ex pected to attend from Medford. as well as from all other points of the valley. GOLFERS 10 QUALIFY Tomorrow and Sunday will see the qualifying rounds for the President's Cup tournament at the Rogue Valley Kolf course, according to announce ment by Jack Hueston, pro at the course. The rounds will be played under the handicap system, with three quarters of the difference to be allow ed. The 32 with low net scores will qualify. Hayes, who has been attending the annual meeting of the alumni asoclatlon of the University ot Oregon medical school In Portland for the past sev eral days, has returned, and Is In his office. The senate, after debating a three way report on the bill which would open the upper Columbia river to seining, from five mile above the Bonneville d am to the Deach u t es river, passed the measure by a vote of 20 to 6. Neither house had made any dent upon the calendars at noon. The amusement tax bill, which was Introduced by Representatives Oleen, Hosch and Magruder, came out un expectedly by the assaesment and taxation committee after It was be lieved the Issue was safely stowed awsy In the committee. The favor able report was adopted, which places the bill on the calendar. The bill assesses a 10 per cent tax on all types of amusement, and all tickets for events must be purchased from the state treasurer. The pro ceeds would go for old age pensions and the state pension law would be changed to raise the maximum per month to 645 and reduces the age of eligibility to W years. Slot Machines Would Aid. The old age pensions would also benefit by the slot mschine bill which was parsed by the house and Is now In the senate where it will either be amended and passed or be killed after an anticipated battle. The liquor bill passed bv the house. In addition to raising the beer tax to $1.30, would levy a tax on wines of 12'i cents per gallon on naturally fermented products and 30 centa on fortified. In addition ad valorem tax of 10 per cent on naturally fermented wines In bot tles. 15 per cent on bottled forti fied and sparkling wines In bottles would be assessed. Brewery Interests were battling the more than 100 per cent Increase In the beer tax. Of this tax. the meas ure provided. 30 cents would go to cities In lieu of soerial city taxes.
