(AP) The SERA headquarters here today reach ed the conclusion that private In dustry ts making Inroads on the re lief rolls of Oregon and thnt em ployment Is on the upgrade. Figure compiled by the state emergency re lief administration show that thous ands have left the roll to take Jobs. On February 1, last, there were 36.891 families on the relief rolls in Oregon, all receiving some form of aid. either directly or through the work relief program. This represented 136,953 persons. Two years ago the number of families on relief totaled 43,869, representing 145.396 persons. Within the two-year period, then, the relief rolls have shown a de crease of 8443 Individuals. Reports reaching the relief com mittee of the construction program which is getting under ?.-ay through out the state show that many men. long on relief, now are being em ployed in private construction Jobs. The white collar class, so-called, also Is less largely represented on the relief rolls. The relief committee today ap proved an additional 942,000 worth of projects. These Included school work at Wheeler, well drilling in Dklah, Umatilla county; aewcr work at Lane county farm, school work at Delight Valley, Lane county, and park and sewer work In Coqullle. Relief administration officials esti mated that 6,400,000 families averag ing 4 to a family, and 776,000 single persons were on relief. Grant for the first 15 daya of March, Including special activities except rural rehabilitation for the entire month, totaled $62,618,411 for 42 states, not Including unannounced funds for Delaware, New York, Illi nois. Minnesota, New Mexico, and Vermont. Running at a cost of 5.000,000 a day, the relief administration ob tained 180,000,000 for March by transfer of PWA funds. Secretary Ickes said recently he expected the total of 176,000,000 he has advanced for relief to be repaid from the M, 880.000,000 work relief bill. Girl Scout Troop Plans Skate Party The Olrl Scouts of Troop 4 and their Invited guests will enjoy a skating party Friday evening at the Armory, after which they will go to Scout headquarters where refresh ments will be served. Mr. and Mrs. C. Watenberger and son, Vernon, arrived home from flan Pedro, Calif., Friday. They left Tues day for Echo, Oregon, where Mr. Wntenberger will shear sheep. Talent Chamber of Commerce met at the city hall Monday night and voted to sponsor the Camp Fire Girls and Boy Scout organizations. Both of these groups are worthy of the sponsorship by the chamber. Cnmp Fire Girls held their regular mooting nt the school Tuesday even ing. The girls are planning a mother daughter banquet the last of March in honor of the 24th anniversary of Camp Fire. The card party, sponsored by the Royal Neighbors Wednesday night was quite a success, and everyone enjoyed the evening. High score in five hundred was held by Mrs. Rob ins. High score In bridge was held by Fred Herehbergcr. High score In pedro was held by Mra. H. Lowe. Re freshments were served by those in charge. Sam Davenport of Ashland was transacting business In Talent Tues day. Mr. Brown of Canyonvtlle, Ore., visited the Sun Gold Rabbltry Wed nesday. Hot lunches at the school have been discontinued far this season. The hot lunches this year have beon very satisfactory under the management of Wanda Works. And It Is hoped that the same good wholesome lunches will be served again next year. Mr. and Mrs. L. Glllerest and daughter, Marguerite, of Medford. visited friends In Talent Monday. The Antloch school puppet show and program was enjoyed by a large crowd and the proceeds of the pie social and cake walks, which was 24.35,- will be used to pay for tne magazine and papers on their read ing table. He waa taken suddenly 111 Sunday afternoon with a ; paralytic stroke. Mr. Sweet had lived j here many year and waa well known ! an over the valley. Among other of the business were plans for the regular work of getting article ready for the fall bazaar. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Parker had aa their guest recently Mr. and Mrs. Ruple, who are here from Texaa. They have leased a place belonging to Mr. Parker near the Red Top school. Mrs. Hussle, Mr. and Mr. C. M. Counts, Mrs. Nerma Fryer and Mrs Beulah Hattley were over from Cave City and O'Brien last week end. Mr. Counts Is postmaster at O'Brien and also proprietor of the O'Brien camp ground. He was purchasing a load of new furnishing for the camp while in Medford. Mrs. Ida Lockwood came out to the Hopkins place and tested out a thousand hatching eggs for Mr. Hop kins Monday evening. Out of the thousand, Mr. Hopkins reported a very small percentage unfertile. Mrs. E. 7. Prottyman, former owner of the Blue Flower lodge at Phoenix, returned to her home in Portland after a three weeks' visit with her sister, Mrs. h. Hlatt, at Ashland. Wm. Bruin of North Talent was In Phoenix Monday morning. Mr. Bruin 1 placing his usual order with Mrs. Ida Lockwood for his baby chicks. Mrs. Cora Evans of North Talent had as guests at dinner last Sunday Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Alvord and son, Theodore.
